About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Medical Director and Neurology Nurse Manager, and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Clinical Nurse (CN) performs established nursing procedures using clinical knowledge to care for patients in a case manager model. The nurse provides excellent clinical care, telephone advice, and patient education to Neurology patients, complying with Medical Center house and Telephone Standards. The CN is accountable for their practice and utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe patient care in the outpatient clinical setting. They carry out established nursing procedures, perform related duties, and provide nursing care for patients with complex needs. The CN is a leader and clinical resource, demonstrating investment in the practice and organization's forward movement. They serve as a resource for all clinical staff and initiate and participate in patient and staff education. The Clinical Nurse must be able to perform and prioritize multiple tasks and work well with staff, patients, and providers, requiring independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy in a complex environment. They work with physician leadership in setting and accomplishing annual goals and with staff to develop, monitor, and maintain systems for nursing care. The clinical nurse ensures a safe environment for patients and staff and is responsible for providing direct nursing care, including triage of phone calls, completing APeX messages, reconstituting medications, and assisting with GI clinic procedures. They provide patient education regarding illnesses, procedure preparation, and medications, respond to questions about medication doses and side effects, inform patients about pathology and laboratory results, perform injections and teach injectable medications, facilitate disability forms and work letters, and assist in securing authorizations for tests and treatments.

Requirements

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
• Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
• Two (2) or more years of recent Ambulatory experience back-office setting
• Recent GI experience in an ambulatory setting
• Knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position
• Demonstrates evidence of basic analytic thinking necessary to care for a group of complex patients such as oncology and a high degree of attention to detail
• Must demonstrate observational skills and the ability to set priorities.
• Ability to function independently and effectively with shifting priorities and considerable pressure
• Must be able to function under stress and with strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Must demonstrate effective skills in applying hospital standards in area of service, team work, communication, respect for others, and time/priority management.
• Ability to delegate tasks in a style that is consistent with promoting leadership and teamwork, seeking assistance as needed; ability to demonstrate leadership experience that support teamwork, professionalism, high quality patient experience, evidence based clinical practice, or other relevant topics
• Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with physicians, nurses, and other medical staff.
• Contributes to team building through participation in unit programs and meetings; contributes to positive morale, using constructive and effective conflict resolution skills
• Demonstrates ability to remain current in professional and technical knowledge and apply this to the job; looks for opportunities for continual improvement in patient care, the work environment, and a commitment to lifelong learning in the field of nursing
• This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Nice To Haves

• Three (3) or more years of adult Ambulatory GI Clinic experience
• Membership in professional organizations is recommended
• BSN

Responsibilities

• Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care.
• Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision.
• Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.
• Responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors.
• Carries out legal responsibilities within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act.
• Accountable to the Manager for overall work performance.
• Handles In-basket Management in EHR to include but not limited to patient questions, medication refills, and referral triages.
• Utilizes telephonic phone programs to receive and make patient and coordination work.
• Perform or assist in clinic based GI Procedures.
