About The Position

The Registered Nurse - Gastroenterology (Office Nurse II) diagnoses and treats patient responses to actual or potential health problems. This role involves case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and providing care supportive to life and well-being, executing medical regimes prescribed by a licensed physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner. The nurse participates in a patient-centered care team focused on coordinated care, supporting patients and families in managing population health using evidence-based methodologies. Nursing regimens must be consistent with existing medical regimes. This position reports to the Outpatient Services-Director of Nursing and Clinical Services.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved RN program.
  • Current New York State licensure.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date.
  • Previous nursing experience in a medical office setting preferred.
  • Excellent communication and writing ability.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses and cares for patients under the direction of a Provider.
  • Supervises the care of licensed practical nurses and medical assistants in the office setting.
  • Provides ongoing and efficient patient assessment, focusing on physical, behavioral, and cognitive needs.
  • Determines patient's care history, including test results, hospitalizations, ED cases, urgent care, community care, and referrals.
  • Performs accurate triage and assessment of patient problems, prioritizes care, and recognizes changes in patient status.
  • Keeps the provider informed of changes in the plan of care.
  • Implements an established plan of care knowledgeably, skillfully, and consistently.
  • Carries out physician pre-approved standing orders for efficient and effective care.
  • Works closely with care coordinators/case managers and other team members to ensure patients receive appropriate education, referrals, medications, and preventative care.
  • Demonstrates awareness, sensitivity, and knowledge of patient/family learning needs, implementing appropriate measures for their rights and safety.
  • Provides comprehensive education to patients on new procedures, medications, etc.
  • Provides education on population management with referrals to community services and disease management programs as per provider order.
  • Documents accurate, concise information in the patient's EMR record in a timely manner.
  • Documents all interactions with patients, consultants, community agencies, or other facilities to facilitate care coordination and management.
  • Documents all orders carried out under provider or provider-approved standing orders.
  • Schedules follow-up visits, consultations, referred testing, and surgeries as per provider orders.
  • Forwards appropriate information requested by consult providers.
  • Obtains pre-authorizations in a timely manner for medical testing, medications, etc.
  • Processes and directs laboratory specimens appropriately and timely, submitting necessary billing information.
  • Performs and documents Point of Care (POC) laboratory controls/testing as per protocol and reports results to the provider.
  • Participates in annual mandatory education, including AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, Thank), to foster effective communication.
  • Independently participates in continuing education courses for professional growth.
  • Is competent to perform/assist the provider with patient diagnostic testing and procedures.
  • Follows policy and procedure regarding medication administration.
  • Performs immunizations according to provider instructions and accurately documents in the patient's EMR.
  • Maintains clean, orderly drug sample cabinets (if applicable) with only current expiration dates, documenting monthly checks.
  • Performs all aspects of universal precautions during patient care.
  • Maintains current Infection Control Certification as required by New York State (if applicable).
  • Understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying patient needs by interacting in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to customer needs, and maintaining communication for a secure and pleasant experience.
