About The Position

UPMC Presbyterian, a Magnet designated hospital, is currently hiring a Full-Time Registered Nurse to the Gamma Knife Department. This role offers a predictable schedule of Monday–Friday, 5:30am–2:00pm (8-hour shifts) with no nights, weekends, or holidays, and no call. The position provides an exceptional work-life balance with a 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio while delivering sedation. The Registered Nurse will work alongside a highly collaborative interdisciplinary team including neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical physicists, joining a tight-knit team of experienced RNs who value teamwork, trust, and mutual support. This role offers the right balance of structure and autonomy, ideal for experienced nurses who thrive in a specialized, independent role.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience preferred.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Experienced procedural nurses strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
  • Must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level.
  • Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within 30 days of hire

  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-person patient workups prior to Gamma Knife procedures, both in clinic and on the day of treatment
  • Prepare and educate patients on the day of the procedure, guiding them through each step of care
  • Administer sedation and closely monitor patients throughout the Gamma Knife procedure and associated MRI
  • Recover and discharge patients following completion of the procedure, ensuring safe transitions of care
  • Apply the nursing process within a Relationship-Based Care model, delivering holistic, patient-centered care
  • Collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary care team to communicate patient status and support optimal outcomes
  • Maintain accurate, thorough documentation to promote continuity and safety of care
