About The Position

The Family Birth Center Labor and Delivery, located on EI33, is comprised of eleven birthing/recovery suites, three surgical delivery rooms, and a neonatal resuscitation room. Support persons are encouraged to be with the laboring woman as she desires. Siblings may attend the birth as well, if the family chooses to prepare the child for that option with the assistance of the Perinatal Education class. Nurses also assist in the perioperative care of patients undergoing caesarean birth, postpartum tubal ligations, dilatation and curettage for miscarriage, and special procedures performed by the Maternal Fetal Medicine service. The Family Birth Center cares for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum patients and their newborn babies. The staff consists of RNs and PCAs who deliver patient care. The area is supported by a variety of resource persons including health unit coordinators, perinatal education coordinators, nursing education specialists, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, and lactation consultants. Physicians from the following Mayo Clinic departments provide care: Obstetrics, Family Medicine, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Neonatology, Pediatrics, and Anesthesiology. Certified nurse midwives and neonatal nurse practitioners also provide care for our patients. The focus of care is family-centered delivered through couplet care model. OB/GYN triage is located at Eisenberg Desk 3C, just off of the center elevators. It is comprised of four triage rooms and a desk area staffed with nurses and a health unit coordinator. Patients and family members start here to determine labor or assist with complications. Family and visitors receive passes and direction to patient rooms. The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
