About The Position

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse is responsible for the nursing care of patients in the Emergency Department and directs other assigned personnel in their care. This role involves assessing physical and mental status, planning, supervising, and evaluating patient care, performing basic emergency procedures, and recognizing and interpreting patient signs, symptoms, and history. The nurse will accurately record and report pertinent information, complete necessary forms, and possess knowledge of nursing principles, emergency patient care, monitoring equipment, emergency medications, and various therapies. They will also instruct and guide other nursing personnel, provide patient and family teaching, and participate in in-service education and PI programs. The role requires interpreting and carrying out physician orders, initiating incident reports, maintaining a safe environment, and understanding community resources. Additionally, the nurse is responsible for evaluating the performance of LPNs and Aides, promoting communication, understanding legal implications of patient care, reporting deaths to KODA, and adhering to infection control policies. The position demands flexibility in meeting staffing needs, the ability to handle public interactions in emergency situations, notifying physicians on call, assisting physicians with patient care, managing supplies, and administering medications with special knowledge for emergency patients.

Requirements

  • Must hold an active Kentucky license as a registered nurse
  • Must have at least 1 year experience as an RN
  • Must have CPR certification
  • Must take ACLS & PALS class at the next offered class

Responsibilities

  • Assessment of physical and mental status.
  • Plans, supervises, and evaluates the care of all patients in the Emergency Department.
  • Uses good judgment, performs basic emergency procedures as required, and calls for assistance as needed (using STAT notification as required).
  • Recognizes and interprets signs, symptoms, and history.
  • Records and reports all pertinent information accurately and neatly.
  • Completes emergency room forms, obtains all information, and signatures required.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles and procedures with special knowledge of the emergency patient, monitoring equipment, emergency medications, inhalation therapy, intravenous therapy, EKG, sterile technique, and CPR.
  • Instructs, guides, and assists other nursing personnel in rendering care to the emergency outpatient.
  • Plans, implements, and documents patient and family teaching (physical and psychological).
  • Gives written instructions.
  • Participates in in-service education and PI programs and serves on designated committees as needed.
  • Attends some position relation in-services and all mandatory in-services (such as: fire, safety, CPR, and infection control).
  • Interprets, transcribes, and carries out physician orders.
  • Initiates incident reports of an accident.
  • Reports all necessary situations to supervisor.
  • Maintains quiet, clean, and safe physical surroundings.
  • Knowledge of community resources available for continuation of nursing care to meet patient and family needs.
  • Responsible for checking and evaluating performance of the LPN’s and Aides working in the emergency department each shift.
  • Takes appropriate corrective action when viewing behavior problems in above personnel.
  • Reports to Supervisor.
  • Knowledge of hospital and emergency department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret these policies and procedures to other nursing personnel, physicians, and community.
  • Promotes line of communication between self, emergency department personnel, and other hospital and nursing personnel.
  • Understands the legal implication of law in regard to patient rights.
  • Aware of legal situations which are to be reported to the authorities and reports to coroner or police as needed and directed by the physician.
  • Report all deaths to KODA.
  • Knowledge of infection control policies and reports problems to Supervisor and Infection Control Staff.
  • Serves as a role model for all nursing personnel by setting an example of high standards in dress, conduct, attitude, and performance.
  • Understands staffing needs of the emergency department and is flexible and cooperative in meeting these needs.
  • Ability to meet the public and handle various situations, which do arise in an emergency situation.
  • Notifies the physician on call and has the necessary information before making the call.
  • Assists the physician in the care of the patient.
  • Aware of supplies needed and replenishes supplies as required.
  • Administration of medication and recording.
  • Special knowledge and skill in administration of medication to the emergency department patient.
