About The Position

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse is an integral part of the Emergency Room and nursing service. The nurse will perform duties within his/her scope of practice and license to ER, Med/Surg patients from pediatrics to geriatrics as well as newborns as designated by State and Federal regulations. The nurse will continually demonstrate an ability to competently provide individualized goal directed nursing care for patients utilizing the nursing process throughout admission to discharge from the ER. Charting will be done in a clear, concise manner. The nurse must have the ability to communicate clearly and maintain a good working rapport with the physicians, patients, families and peers. This nurse must maintain a professional manner and attitude and should remain calm in difficult patient situations. He/she must possess good organizational skills, good judgement and initiative.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse from an accredited school of nursing with a current license from the State of Mississippi.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support and recommended Advance Life Support and Pediatric Life Support certification.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportion s, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies changing conditions of the patients and reports to the physician.
  • Initiates emergency treatment within their scope of practice and adjusts treatment as specified for pediatric to geriatric patients.
  • Obtains VS, patient complaint and other information needed for triage. RN or MD must triage all patients that present to their ER Department.
  • Calculates drug dosages and administers medication to patients ranging from newborn to geriatric and is responsible for all medications given in the ER.
  • Completes all hospital required documentation in EMR for necessary treatments and/or procedures done.
  • Notifies nursing units of ER patient transfers and reports patient’s condition.
  • Follows Emergency Room triage policy.
  • Counts all narcotics at the beginning of each shift and reports and discrepancies to House Supervisor.
  • Answers ambulance calls from paramedics and assists with emergency transfers to another facility.
  • Supervises non-licensed staff assigned to ER.
  • Transports patients in and out of ER department and transfers patients to nursing units.
  • Restricts visitor traffic thru ER and follows hospital and ER visitor policies.
  • Starts IV’s and monitors intravenous fluids on patients, including pediatrics, using proper aseptic technique.
  • Administers and monitors blood and blood products per hospital policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrates a complete knowledge of the location, care, and operation of unit equipment.
  • Participates in patient and family teaching.
  • Initiates or assists with emergency measures for s sudden adverse development in patients such as cardiac arrest.
  • Inserts foley catheters and obtains urine samples.
  • Assists in updating and revising the policy and procedure manuals as necessary.
  • Rotate shifts as required including weekends and holidays.
  • Participates in all hospital wide PI activities.
  • Reports all abnormal lab and other diagnostic studies to physician.
  • Accompanies pediatric or med/surg patient on ambulance transfer if deemed necessary by
  • The House Supervisor or DON.
  • Supervises the economical utilization of supplies and ensures that equipment is maintained.
  • In a clean and safe manner during his/her tour of duty.
  • Prepares and delivers verbal shift report when his/her tour of duty has ended.
  • Updates skills by attending services and staff meetings.
  • Maintains certification and licensure as required by the department of nursing.
  • Uses CDC Infection Control procedures when caring for a patient as well as safe.
  • Practices for their own personal safety.
  • Follow hospital policies and procedures when caring for psychiatric patients awaiting.
  • Admission to the state hospital.
  • Floats to another unit on occasion to work within their scope of practice, if deemed
  • Necessary by House Supervisor and or DON.
  • Must be able to give and administer care to patients from all groups across the life span.
  • As well as be familiar with the treatments, procedures and medications for all groups across the life span.
  • Restocks medication and supplies in department as needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness of Medication Room and eating room.
  • Cleans and organize storage areas.
  • Follows HIPPA laws regarding patients’ health information.
  • Checks for expired drugs and supplies in the Emergency Room
  • Checks crash chart every shift and documents result in appropriate area. Follows Crash Cart Policy for restocking crash cart.
  • Any other Duties as assigned by Administration or Director of Nursing.
