About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee), this role implements, supervises, and evaluates the nursing care of each patient using a nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The scope of care extends from admission to discharge, with consideration for the aging process throughout the life span, including all developmental stages and cultural patterns. Requirements

  • Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
  • Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
  • Successful completion of the Hospital's Patient Care Delivery Orientation Program, which includes entry level credentialing of selected skills.
  • Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • Two years’ medical-surgical nursing experience and telemetry experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years Endoscopy experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct nursing care to patients with complex needs.
  • Implements the steps of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation) and integrate these activities with all members of the health care team.
  • Delegates and supervises nursing care activities provided by personnel assigned to assist in the provision of nursing care such as, but not limited to, Licensed Practical nurses, Nursing Student Associates, Certified Nursing assistants, Technician, Unit Assistants and Unit Service Coordinators.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care activities and assures compliance to standards.
  • Manages the implementation of therapeutic/diagnostic orders as per policy.
  • Evaluates and communicates to physician patient response and condition changes.
  • Keeps family informed of care status and changes in that status.
  • Coordinates discharge planning for patients, families utilizing hospital and community resources.
  • Teaches patients and families in accordance with standards and patient teaching guidelines.
  • Maintains patient and family confidentiality according to hospital policy.
  • Serves as an active patient and family advocate.
  • Documents according to policy and procedure.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support certification.
  • Identifies cardiopulmonary arrest and initiates CPR.
  • Demonstrates adherence to Universal Precautions, Safety Programs and other infection control measures.
  • Reviews fire, disaster, and infection control in manual.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform responsibilities in emergency/code situation.
  • Checks emergency equipment.
  • Reports unsafe situations to the Registered Nurse or to the Clinical Manager.
  • Lifts correctly to avoid harm to self.
  • Utilizes assistive devices when available.
  • Maintains an environment conducive to patient comfort and safety.
  • Exercises proper care in the use of equipment and reports need for repair to the appropriate person.
  • Utilizes side rails and restraints in accordance with Nursing procedure and policy of Rhode Island Hospital.
  • Adheres to fall precaution protocol.
  • Adheres to constant observation protocols as assigned.

  • Meets and maintains credentialing requirements according to the nursing policy and procedures.

  • Utilizes time, equipment, and supplies in a cost-effective manner.
  • Participates in unit activities including meetings and projects such as Quality Assessment and Improvement.
  • Participates in the orientation of all team members.
  • Participates in appropriate staff education programs to maintain and expand job knowledge and skills.
  • Establishes annual developmental goals in collaboration with Clinical Manager.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources in administering care to patients and families.
  • Participates in the preceptor program as assigned.
  • Contributes to ongoing performance appraisals of personnel as determined by the Clinical Manager.
  • Assumes charge position responsibilities for the patient care unit as delegated.
  • Works with faculty and students of academic affiliation to meet learner objectives within the context of the prescribed plan of care.
  • Updates knowledge of professional nursing, medical, technical and technological developments.
  • Participates with others to implement accepted clinical advancements into practice.
  • With nursing leadership, incorporates approved research findings into practice.
  • Consults with nurses with advanced clinical expertise on an as needed basis (Registered Nurse II, Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Educator Unit Teacher, etc.).
  • Monitors the patient during the administration of Conscious Sedation according to policy.
  • Monitors the patient post-procedure for complications.
  • Assists physician performing endoscopic procedures, including preparing and administering medications as directed by physician and retrieving, passing and handling instruments/supplies as directed by the physician.
  • Assures all necessary equipment and supplies are set up in procedure room prior to examination.
  • Monitors the inventory of medical supplies and equipment and assures adequate levels are maintained in accordance with established guidelines and to meet anticipated needs.
  • Assists with cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining endoscopes and accessories according to policy and procedure.
  • Performs specimen testing when directed while following guidelines for handling specimens.
  • Adheres to Endoscopy Department policies and procedures.
