The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room demonstrates critical knowledge, skills, and judgment to care for patients requiring complex assessment and therapies, high intensity interventions, and high-level continuous nursing vigilance. This role involves utilizing information and assessment data to anticipate and respond with confidence, adapting to rapidly changing patient conditions. The nurse identifies and prioritizes information to take immediate and decisive evidence-based, patient-focused action. Responsibilities include monitoring and adjusting specialized equipment, interpreting electronic displays, and responding to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and protocols. The nurse observes, monitors, and assesses patients’ conditions, recognizing and interpreting serious situations, and communicating with physicians or taking emergency measures when necessary. They assess patient needs, develop/revise individualized plans of care, and evaluate patient progress. The role also involves functioning as a patient and family advocate, demonstrating advanced knowledge and skills for age-appropriate care, and potentially serving as a preceptor, charge nurse, unit educator, or nurse clinician. Communication and collaboration with the medical staff and interdisciplinary team are essential for effective patient and unit management. The nurse acts as a role model, supports hospital and nursing department goals, and demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles. They coordinate care, delegate appropriately, and document patient care accurately and consistently, meeting all regulatory standards. Competency in nursing skills and equipment use is required, along with prioritizing patient care based on Evidence-Based Practice Standards. Effective problem identification and resolution, delegation, and communication of patient status are key. The nurse fosters a compassionate and therapeutic environment, demonstrates awareness of legal issues and patients’ rights, and collaborates with the education department for new team member and student support. Consistent attendance and compliance with hospital policies are expected.
