About The Position

The professional nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care at Waverly Health Center. The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, delegating, and coordinating nursing care based on the patient’s problem and needs, by initiating the nursing process in the everyday practice of nursing. This role utilizes substantial specialized judgment and skill in providing direct and indirect patient care, observation, and counsel to patients and family, and accepts responsibility for the total nursing care of assigned patients. The nurse communicates with providers, manager, and/or other healthcare team members about changes in patients’ clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Additionally, the nurse assists with the clinical development of other nursing department staff members by serving as both mentor and consultant.

Requirements

Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.
Ability to learn and navigate computer systems including online training modules, employee timesheet, and performance appraisal system.
Job specific systems are also required.

Nice To Haves

Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred.
For Surgical Assistant only: Must maintain either the CNOR (certified nurse operating room) or RNFA (registered nurse first assist) certification.

Responsibilities

Systematically collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or the situation on an ongoing basis, including accurate initial and ongoing assessment data, and discharge assessment data.
Analyzes assessment data to determine diagnoses or issues, appropriately determining actual and potential nursing diagnoses based on assessment of data and accurately analyzing monitor/equipment data.
Develops a plan individualized to the patient’s characteristics or the situation that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain identified expected outcomes, considering needs specific to the standard of care for the population served. Initiates and revises a care plan on admission and throughout the patient's stay, involving the patient, family, and other healthcare providers.
Implements the identified plan in a safe and timely manner, ensuring all cares are provided according to the individual plan of care. Collaborates with other disciplines to coordinate care in a safe environment conducive to healing, utilizing relationship-based care and Planetree patient-centered programs to meet holistic needs.
Evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes and uses ongoing assessment data to revise diagnoses, outcomes, plan of care, and implementation as needed. Completes care plan upon discharge and documents care provided accurately at point of care.
Evaluates own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations. Exhibits autonomy in care of assigned patients, seeks assistance from proper personnel or resources when appropriate, and completes reflective journal notes.
Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues, and actively participates in teams and committees. Volunteers for WHC committees or projects, addresses issues with colleagues constructively, shares knowledge and skills, and maintains compassionate relationships.
Integrates evidence and research findings into practice, utilizing the best available evidence to guide practice decisions and identifying clinical problems specific to nursing practice.
Provides leadership during assigned shift, interacts effectively with others to accomplish patient care and administrative activities, engages in anticipatory planning, and generates solutions for clinical and operational issues as a Charge Nurse.
Acts as a resource to clinical areas by providing direction and assistance during assigned shift, coordinating and directing assignment of resources, and responding to emergent situations as per protocol as a House Supervisor.
Provides preoperative and postoperative patient management in collaboration with other healthcare providers, recognizing safety hazards, providing proper exposure, handling tissue, providing hemostasis, and suturing under the direction of a surgeon as a Surgical Assistant.
Provides pre-operative teaching to patients, verifies demographic information, medical history, allergies, current medications, completes full body assessment questionnaires, compiles patient charts, and assists with clerical duties as a Pre-Operative Teaching Nurse.
Performs medical screening exams with competency, provides pertinent information to providers, takes accurate medical histories, performs focused nursing assessments, reports patient condition changes, completes medication reconciliation, monitors patient interventions and medications, and provides patient education as an Emergency Department Nurse.
Provides direct and indirect patient care to all pain services patients, including assessment, medical history, current medications, and education. Assists providers with procedures, chart preparation, follow-up, referrals, prior authorizations, opioid monitoring, and collaborates with team members as a Pain Services Nurse.
