About The Position

Provides nursing care to renal dialysis patients. Designs nursing care plans and assists in the development of the overall care plan for patients. Works closely with other members of the care team to ensure that appropriate overall care is administered in a manner conducive to effective maintenance of patient conditions.

Requirements

  • Current NYS Registered Nurse License
  • Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance/performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Assesses and coordinates overall patient care in relation to the dialysis treatment, dietary restrictions, and psychosocial and physical needs of the individual.
  • Observes and reports symptoms and conditions of the dialysis patient to the charge nurse and/or the physician.
  • Provides dialysis treatment in conformance with nursing standards to include initiation, monitoring, and terminations of treatment.
  • Administers medications and blood in accordance with unit policy and procedures and physician orders.
  • Records and documents patient treatment, reactions, conditions, history, medications, and overall adaptability to dialysis.
  • Assists in patient and staff education in the care and treatment of dialysis patients and helps physicians evaluate the effectiveness of the dialysis regimen.
  • Dispose of all contaminated trash and linen in appropriate place.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment. If any mechanical problems are noted, be able to troubleshoot and call chief technician for immediate assistance.
  • Maintains a safe environment.
  • Maintains CPR certification annually.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Will be required for on-call and cover the acute care unit at Southampton Hospital
