About The Position

The Atlanta VA Medical Center (VAMC) is a Joint Commission-designated medical facility located in Decatur, Georgia, serving Veterans in northeast Georgia. It is a level 1A tertiary care facility offering comprehensive medical, surgical, and geriatric specialty services, along with state-of-the-art diagnostic testing. The medical center has 466 inpatient beds, including a Community Living Center, a domiciliary, and a Residential Treatment Program. As a teaching hospital, it collaborates with Emory University School of Medicine and Morehouse School of Medicine, providing hands-on experience and utilizing advanced technology, education, and research.

Requirements

• Completed courses for nursing from an accredited program approved by either the Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
• A current license in at least one state, territory, or commonwealth in the U.S. or the District of Columbia.
• A minimum of three years' direct patient care experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversees the preparation of the delivery system, dialysate bath, and dialyzer and confirms that all mandatory alarm tests on the dialyzer and equipment are performed.
• Reviews physician orders for dialysis patients, collect pre-treatment dialysis data, and review patient records prior to dialysis.
• Conducts pre-dialysis patient assessment including obtaining patient vital signs and assessing the patient's vascular access, laboratory findings, and the patient's general health.
• Verifies that patients are taking all prescribed medications and performs medication reconciliation.
• Assesses, prepares, and cannulates a patient's vascular access (including need insertion in arteriovenous fistula or grafts for aseptic connection with dialysis equipment).
• Utilizes sterile techniques to assess the dialysis catheter exit site and to apply dressing on the patient's vascular access (dialysis catheter, arteriovenous access) per protocols.
• Conducts post dialysis assessment and patient discharge by evaluating treatment, documenting medication administration utilizing the appropriate protocols, assessing condition of vascular access, discharging the patient when vital signs are stable, and documenting and recording patient treatment data.
• Maintains responsibility for providing coverage to the dialysis center.
• May be required to work with COVID 19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation for COVID 19.
