About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN), Diagnostic Imaging (DI), provides safe, patient- and family-centred nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and image-guided procedures within the Diagnostic Imaging Department. The RN practices in accordance with the standards established by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), Southlake Health policies and procedures and all applicable legislation and professional standards. Working collaboratively with radiologists, technologists and the interprofessional healthcare team, the RN is responsible for patient assessment, procedural preparation, intravenous access, medication administration, physiologic monitoring, moderate sedation recovery, patient education and post-procedure care. The RN supports patients undergoing CT examinations, Cardiac CT imaging, image-guided biopsies, interventional radiology procedures and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The successful candidate is a highly motivated, organized and self-directed clinician who demonstrates excellent critical thinking, clinical judgment and communication skills while providing compassionate, evidence-informed care in a fast-paced procedural environment. This is a temporary 6 month contract position.

Requirements

  • Current registration and member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Minimum three (3) years recent nursing experience in Diagnostic Imaging, Critical Care, PACU or Emergency setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in venipuncture and peripheral IV insertion.
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience monitoring and recovering patients receiving moderate (conscious) sedation.
  • Experience in pre-, intra-, and post-procedural patient assessment and care.
  • Completion of Critical Care Level I and II (CC1 and CC2).
  • Demonstrated competency in ECG interpretation and cardiac monitoring.
  • Excellent physical assessment and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of contrast media adverse reactions, including recognition, management and emergency response related to contrast allergy.
  • Ability to respond effectively to patient emergencies, including Code Blue situations.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization and time-management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and patient education skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Proficient computer skills and experience with electronic documentation systems.
  • Recent experience (within the past two years) in Diagnostic Imaging or Interventional Radiology.
  • Experience assisting with CT-guided biopsies, drain insertions, aspirations and other image-guided procedures.
  • Experience supporting Cardiac CT imaging, including patient preparation and heart rate optimization protocols.
  • Experience with Point-of-Care testing (e.g., creatinine testing).
  • Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) certification.
  • Experience using PACS, Meditech (including SUR module), RM&R, and other electronic clinical information systems.

  • Must be able to perform all necessary bona fide duties for the position, as outlined in the position guide.

  • Proven ability to attend work regularly as per the Attendance Support Policy.

  • ACLS certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Providing patient-focused care and optimum imaging in CT and Radiography to aid in the patient's diagnosis or treatment at Southlake Health and affiliated sites, including, but not limited to Georgina Health Centre.
  • Utilizing technical and medical judgment and knowledge to evaluate image quality, manipulate digital data for final image formation and archival; ensures the safe and effective use of ionizing radiation in accordance with the regulations of the Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act (HARP).
  • Assessing the patient's condition and maintaining awareness of procedural complications and contrast reactions; recognizing those conditions requiring immediate attention and initiating appropriate response.
  • Operates, troubleshoots and ensures that medical imaging equipment and ancillary equipment is performing in an effective and safe manner.
  • Assists the Radiologist in procedures as required.
  • Performs cross-functional and other responsibilities as assigned and/or requested.
