About The Position

Henry Ford Jackson Hospital is seeking a Clinical Unit Leader (CUL) for its Emergency Department. This role functions under the general supervision of the unit manager and/or director, acting as a shift supervisor and clinical liaison. The CUL is responsible for ensuring unit standards are maintained, fostering a team-oriented work environment, and contributing to staff development through mentoring and coaching. Duties include assisting with hiring, orientation, performance monitoring and evaluation, problem-solving, employee counseling, staffing, and payroll. The CUL also serves as a contact for internal and external customers, aiming to create a positive customer service environment and meet quality and accreditation standards. This position involves clinical practice, including off-shift rotation for clinical assessment and staff evaluation, management of the clinical area by participating in goal development and staffing plans, and quality assurance and research by evaluating unit quality metrics and promoting evidence-based practice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with the expectation of obtaining a BSN within five (5) years
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in an acute care environment
  • Current Michigan Nursing License
  • Valid BLS certification
  • ACLS certification within one (1) year of hire
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills necessary for effective leadership of the patient care team
  • Strong nursing processes
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Advanced assessment skills
  • Knowledge about and experience in the department population served

Responsibilities

  • Function as shift supervisor and clinical liaison with staff, physicians, and management.
  • Provide continuity of leadership day to day.
  • Act as a supervisor, role model, mentor, coach, and resource person to staff.
  • Ensure all unit standards are maintained and a team-oriented work environment is fostered.
  • Assist with attracting, developing, maintaining, and retaining qualified staff members.
  • Assist with hiring, orientation, monitoring, and evaluating performance.
  • Engage in problem-solving, employee counseling, and corrective action.
  • Manage staffing, assignment, and direction of staff, and payroll.
  • Serve as a contact for internal and external customers.
  • Create an environment that fosters positive customer service and meets all quality and accreditation standards.
  • Implement and monitor new and ongoing processes.
  • Rotate to off shifts as determined by staffing needs and the nurse manager to provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation of staff.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
  • Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
  • Participate in planning and problem-solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
  • Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality metrics and quality improvement activities.
  • Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
  • Promote staff involvement in evidence-based practice and clinical research, as applicable.
