About The Position

The Medical Surgical Registered Nurse is responsible for managing the care for the pediatric, adult and elderly patient experience, general medical condition, general surgical procedures, orthopedic surgeries, and post trauma patients which require general assessments related to specific conditions, general therapies and interventions, using nursing process throughout her/his shift. The Medical Surgical RN is responsible to the Inpatient Manager for assigned Medical Surgical Department. The Medical Surgical RN is responsible for meeting the established standard of nursing practice for all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment on the unit. Will delegate, supervise and assist in care provided by PCA/PCT’s, and CNA’s. The Medical Surgical Registered Nurse will have the opportunity to be cross trained to other nursing departments as determined by department needs and clinical abilities.

Requirements

  • Graduated of an accredited school of nursing 2 year degree; 4 yr preferred
  • Current licensure in good standing in the state of Minnesota
  • Evidence of BLS credential Mandatory
  • Additionally, the RN will be required to credential in ACLS and PALS within parameter of hire discussed by manager (usually after 6 months)
  • Medical/Surgical Nursing staff will successfully complete facility-approved trauma training within twelve (12) months of employment to ensure competency in the care of trauma patients.
  • Awareness of healthcare policies, regulations, and legal/ethical standards, including patients’ rights and privacy regulations ( i.e. HIPAA)
  • Familiarity with patient assessment techniques and the ability to interpret patient data.
  • Knowledge of developing and implementing patient centered care plans.
  • Understanding of infection control protocols and safety procedures
  • Performing patient assessments, including monitoring vital signs and conducting physical examinations.
  • Administering medications safely and accurately, including dosage calculations.
  • Wound care, IV insertion, and other clinical procedures.
  • Basic life support and first aid.
  • Clearly and effectively communicating with patients, families, and the healthcare team, including explaining complex medical information in an understandable manner.

  • Ability to respond quickly and decisively to emergency situations, while participating in shelter-in-place and disaster response protocols.
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams, communicating effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), secure messaging applications, and collaborative tools (e.g.) Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace.
  • Proficient with Paycom and other Information Systems applicable to position, including knowledge of Emergency Preparedness Websites/MNTraInternet software; order entry and order processing systems and ability to thoroughly document clinical services, maintain accurate patient records, and effectively utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems i.e. EPIC.
  • Apply logical problem-solving and decision-making skills in complex situations.
  • Make sound decisions in real time, often under pressure (early warning signs, inconsistencies, potential complications) using critical thinking.

  • Attend all mandatory education programs and demonstrate proficiency related to general safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Attend all department-specific training, and demonstrate proficiency related to safety and job-related hazards.
  • Understand and follow MMHC procedures for exposure control / bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
  • Comply with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory standards and requirements.
  • Attire is neat, clean, and appropriate for the work environment and according to MMHC policies.
  • Wear proper identification while on duty.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all MMHC and patient information at all times.
  • Report to work on time and maintain defined standards for attendance.
  • Attend mandatory meetings.
  • Able to perform essential job duties that meet job performance expectations and organizational standards while upholding MMHC mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the health care team, RN will provide the highest quality nursing care and experience for all assigned patients.
  • Delivers professional nursing care to patients within the hospital, using established Standards of Nursing Practice and RN Scope of Practice.
  • Conducts an individualized patient assessment of physiological, psychological, social, personal needs of patients. Prioritizing the data collection based on the school age, adolescent, adult, and elderly patient’s immediate condition or needs within timeframe specified by policies, procedures, or protocols.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by the patient’s condition and/or hospital policies, procedures, or protocols.
  • Develops plan of care that is individualized for the patient reflecting collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.
  • Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by the physician in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as established by individualized plan of care for the patient and his/her family.
  • Provides individualized patient/family education customized to the patient and his/her family.
  • Documents patient assessment findings, physical/psychosocial responses to nursing interventions and progress towards problem resolution and patient goals.
  • Initiates emergency resuscitative measures according to pediatric and adult resuscitation protocols.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, and family.
  • Provides care in non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to age appropriate, and patient and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity, and rights.
  • Reports patient condition to provider and health care team as appropriate during each shift.

  • Maintains competency in medical surgical nursing for all ages determined by the Clinical Educator, Inpatient Manager and CNO. Maintains continuing educational experience consistent with requirements of Minnesota State Board of Nursing. Maintains and updates professional skills and knowledge related to area of responsibility.
  • Practices professional nursing according to established standards of nursing practice and demonstrates the ability to apply scientific principles to problem solving through the nursing process.
  • Ability to organize and time management to complete work, perform a variety of duties, communicate and work effectively with others.
  • Knowledge of nursing ethics, and practice nursing in accordance with sound ethical standards.
  • Reports concerns to the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse on timely basis.
  • Successfully demonstrates professional nursing skills, competencies, and expected outcomes as required for a MMHC Registered Nurse.
