Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college of nursing required OR obtained within 5 years from date of hire for nurses with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • For MJE Progressive Care: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing preferred, graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements.
  • For NMH Critical Care: National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification training required by end of orientation.
  • For MJE Progressive Care: NIH Stroke Scale training required at hire or within 6 months of hire.
  • For MJE Progressive Care: Successful completion of Telemetry Cardiac Rhythm Course.
  • NMH Cath Lab: 1 year experience in Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiac Unit, Emergency Room, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Progressive Care unit.
  • Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardio Life Support (ACLS).
  • NMH Surgery Pre Op Services: ACLS required within 3 months of hire.
  • Surgery OP Support HW: ACLS required within 6 months of hire.
  • MJE Progressive Care: ACLS required within 1 year of hire.
  • MFH Radiology Diagnostics: ACLS required within 3 months of hire.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate and interact with patients, family members, hospital personnel, and co-workers.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to learn, retain, and utilize computer skills that are required for department and hospital information system.

  • MJE Radiology-Surgical: American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Responsibilities

  • Provide appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, ensuring understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria.
  • Perform an initial and ongoing assessment to determine the assigned patient's ongoing nursing care needs, including data from the patient/significant other(s) as appropriate. Prioritize data collection based on immediate patient needs and use assessment findings in discharge planning.
  • Develop, review, revise, and individualize the plan of care to address the patient's nursing care needs for optimum patient care outcomes, collaborating with providers and other clinical disciplines as appropriate. Provide teaching specific to the patient's health care problem and ensure the care plan reflects continuing care needs and/or referrals for discharge/transfer.
  • Implement interventions that are consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner, following nursing protocols and standards of care, and utilizing current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature.
  • Evaluate patient care to determine response to care/interventions for optimal patient outcome, monitoring outcomes and documenting patient response. Evaluate the patient's capabilities and/or limitations related to nursing and medical interventions and their ability to manage care needs after dismissal. Give a complete verbal or written change of shift report to the oncoming care provider, including current care requirements, SBAR content, and overall plan of care.
  • Perform technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety, learning new skills and equipment within the unit's specifications and timeframe. Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment and follow appropriate procedures for obtaining, returning, cleaning, or disposing of equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain professional behavior in attitude, demeanor, and interactions to achieve the organization's mission. Communicate effectively to solve problems at the personal and unit level, being approachable and professional in working with other health professionals, ancillary staff, patients, and family. Take pride in the unit by actively participating in restocking and maintaining a clean environment. Maintain a professional appearance, behavior, and work environment, and maintain competence in the area of experience. Participate in meetings and/or committees as needed.
  • Initiate action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risks to the patient, family, or hospital employees. Complete appropriate report forms for any risk (e.g., variance/incident report, patient concern report, maintenance request) and communicate to appropriate personnel regarding unresolved issues. Work within the scope of practice as defined by the State Nurse Practice Act and observe appropriate precautions when administering hazardous medications or handling excreta from patients who have received hazardous medications.
  • Review, delegate, and evaluate plans for appropriate utilization of staff at all levels of practice in accordance with the state's Nurse Practice Act and Professional Standards of Practice, ensuring the right task is delegated to the right person with the right communication and feedback.
  • Be fiscally accountable and act professionally responsible for human and other resources. Charge accurately for the use of supplies and equipment according to policy.
