About The Position

This position is for a Registered Nurse on a Cardiovascular Surgery Progressive Care Unit (PCU). This unit serves adult and pediatric patients requiring specialized care after cardiovascular surgeries such as coronary bypass grafts, valve repair/replacements, left ventricular assist devices, and congenital anomaly repairs. The unit is equipped with advanced monitoring systems including ECG, SpO2, and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring. The nursing role involves pulmonary care, promoting patient independence, providing emotional support, extensive patient education, and discharge planning. The registered nurse is accountable for coordinating nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care, functioning within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and adhering to the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN provides leadership through preceptor roles, informal/formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. Delegation of patient care is based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. The role requires excellent communication, mentoring, and teaching skills, with potential participation in committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, requiring state licensure and VisaScreen or equivalent certification.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA).
  • One year of RN experience required.
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) must be valid for 90 days post start date; acceptable certifications include: American Heart Association (AHA)/ Heartcode® BLS, Military Training Network, Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
  • Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.

Responsibilities
