The Cardiovascular Surgery Inpatient unit is a dynamic, fast paced 28-bed unit. State of the art technology and pioneering of new procedures translate into continuous learning and professional development for all staff. The UHN CV Surgery division has one of the few Canadian myectomy surgery programs, a large adult congenital cardiac surgery programs, and specialized programs such as transapical aortic valve replacements and Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). Nurses manage patients with pacemakers, chest tubes, and tracheotomies. Ongoing educational programs support advanced roles such as dedicated telemetry nurse and management of patients with ventricular assist devices. Acute Care Nurse Practitioners provide day-to-day care with the support of an actively involved physician group. The majority of patients have diagnoses of cardiovascular disease requiring: Aorto-coronary Bypass Surgery, Cardiac Valve Repair or Replacement, Adult Congenital Heart Repair, Ventricular Assist Device insertion prior to Cardiac Transplant.
