About The Position

This position involves collaborating with physicians to develop and implement patient care plans aimed at restoring optimal health. The Registered Nurse provides direct bedside nursing care, executes medical orders, and oversees the functions of various support staff including Nurse Assistants, Patient Care Associates, and others. A key responsibility is evaluating the effectiveness of the care plan. The role also includes a leadership component, focusing on integrating evidence-based practices, delegating and coordinating nursing tasks, facilitating patient conferences, and addressing patient teaching needs for ongoing care and discharge. Professional growth is encouraged through educational opportunities. The nurse will also teach and mentor ancillary personnel, new employees, and students, and function as a team leader for patient placement and assignment delegation. Specific to the Cardiovascular Care Unit (CVCU), responsibilities include assisting physicians with special procedures, monitoring patients during procedures, administering medications for procedures requiring sedation, charting in the Paragon system, preparing patients for procedures, providing clinical demonstrations, assisting with inventory control, maintaining accurate patient records, completing yearly competencies on high-risk devices (Balloon Pump, Impella), obtaining ACT levels for sheath pulls, performing sheath pulls safely, and managing access site complications.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and holding a current license to practice in the state of Michigan.
  • Advance cardiac life support (ACLS) certification

  • Six months experience in acute care setting with critical care experience
  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with physician to provide a plan of care that will return the patient to optimal health.
  • Provides bedside nursing care and carries out medical orders.
  • Delegates to and oversees Nurse Assistant, Patient Care Associate, OB Care Associate, Surgical Service Assistant, Nursing Clerk and Psychiatric Tech functions.
  • Responsible for evaluating effectiveness of care plan.
  • Integrates evidence-based knowledge into practice.
  • Delegates and coordinates tasks and assignments of nursing care.
  • Facilitates/participates in patient conferences.
  • Identifies and provides the means to meet patients’ ongoing and discharge/transfer teaching needs by communicating with the appropriate resource persons and attending discharge/transfer planning conferences.
  • Assumes the responsibility for professional growth by seeking out educational opportunities and utilizing programs in the hospital or elsewhere in the community.
  • Teaches and/or guides professional and ancillary personnel.
  • Precepts/mentors new employees and students.
  • Functions as a team leader to ensure proper patient placement and delegation of assignments.
  • Assists the physician in the performance of special procedures.
  • Assists in monitoring the patient’s condition during procedures.
  • Administers medication for procedures whereby patients require sedation and monitors patients appropriately.
  • Utilizes the Paragon system for charting and documentation of patient care information.
  • Prepares patients for special procedures when necessary and transports patient to procedure room.
  • Provides clinical demonstrations to allied health students and participates in departmental in-service education, staff development, and patient education.
  • Assist in inventory control to ensure that areas area appropriately supplied.
  • Maintains precise and meaningful patient records on nursing observations and procedures done including Time Outs.
  • Maintain yearly competences on low volume, high risk items such as Balloon Pump and Impella devices.
  • Obtain ACT level for appropriate sheath pulls.
  • Perform sheath pull in safe and effective manner.
  • Able to manage access site complications and assist other floors when complications arise.
