About The Position

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse is a key member of a multidisciplinary cardiovascular care team dedicated to improving patient outcomes through risk-factor modification, supervised exercise therapy, and comprehensive patient education. This role provides clinical assessment, telemetry monitoring, emergency response readiness, and care coordination for patients recovering from cardiac events or procedures. The nurse promotes safe rehabilitation, supports lifestyle modification, and collaborates with providers and interdisciplinary teams to optimize cardiovascular health and prevent disease progression. The registered nurse, adheres to the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. is primarily responsible for professional performance and direct patient care. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and their families across the health care continuum. The registered nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality and fiscal patient care outcomes using the model of care designed by the nursing department and in accordance with established agency policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines and standards of practice.

Requirements

  • Nursing degree: Diploma, ASN or BSN (preferred)
  • Ability to obtain BSN within 4 years
  • Registration and current RN licensure in the state of MA in good standing required.
  • Requires current basic life support (BLS) certification.
  • Some units may require Advanced Cardiac Life support ( ACLS) certification.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enters, and interprets computerized data/information.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with various members of the health care team, patients, and families.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
  • Ability to effectively manage stress due to critical issues related to patient care, changing organizational climate and personnel issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Multilingual skills (beyond that of English) in languages appropriate to the patient populations served by the medical center preferred.
  • Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty, certification required for certain practice areas, e.g., enterstomal therapy, epidemiology, peri-operative areas.
  • Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement research utilization projects.
  • Ability to effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the patient populations served.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive nursing care to cardiac rehabilitation patients following cardiac procedures or heart surgery to promote recovery and reduce cardiovascular risk.
  • Performs cardiovascular patient assessments including evaluation of coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular disease, and cardiac rhythm disorders.
  • Monitors patients during supervised exercise therapy using continuous ECG telemetry, blood pressure monitoring, and symptom assessment.
  • Interprets ECG rhythms and responds appropriately to arrhythmias and clinical changes.
  • Manages clinical care needs including IV line placement, medication administration, and infusion pump utilization.
  • Conducts medication reconciliation and provides patient education on cardiovascular medications, risk-factor modification, and lifestyle management.
  • Educates patients on diabetes management, cardiac risk reduction, and heart-healthy behaviors.
  • Participates in development, implementation, and monitoring of individualized exercise therapy plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team.
  • Provides rapid assessment and emergency response during exercise sessions; maintains ACLS certification and readiness for cardiac emergencies.
  • Collaborates closely with physicians, electrophysiology staff, behavioral medicine, pharmacy, social work, and allied health professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with referring providers regarding patient progress and clinical status.
  • Supports non-invasive cardiology services including assistance with resting and stress echocardiographic procedures as needed.
