Nursing skills gained on this unit include managing unstable critical patients, open heart surgery, general surgery, STEMI, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure/prone, and oncological surgery. The unit has achieved the 2023 Beacon Designation and provides structured support for new nurses transitioning through their first 2 years from novice to expert, integrating into the open-heart recovery program. They support the local community by providing quick STEMI recovery and comprehensive post-arrest care along with a multitude of cardiac procedures. Multiple staff members have presented at national conferences. The unit emphasizes constant professional development with a high number of certified nurses across different subspecialties. The team works together to deliver high-quality care to the sickest patients. The unit culture is a collective of highly motivated nurses dedicated to learning and evolving critical care nursing, with structures and support in place from orientation through certification in the first 1-2 years as a CIC Nurse. It highlights peer and managerial support to help each other and deal with the unique stress of working in a critical care environment. Democratic staff input is encouraged through the Unit Based Council, which impacts and shapes work on CIC.

Requirements

  • Associates of Nursing (ASN) required; Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program. Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

Responsibilities
