About The Position

Guthrie Cortland Medical Center (GCMC) is seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse (RN) to provide exceptional care in its Cancer Center. This is a per diem RN position, primarily Monday-Friday with occasional holiday and weekend responsibilities. The Renzi Cancer Center is a specialized outpatient oncology and hematology clinic offering comprehensive care, including infusion therapies, blood products, and supportive treatments. The unit is staffed by registered nurses who collaborate with a multidisciplinary team. The Oncology nurse provides professional, comprehensive nursing care, ensuring safe, compassionate, therapeutic, and evidence-based quality care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Code of Ethics, and the ANA scope and standards of practice. Essential functions include assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patients’ care; developing and updating patient care plans; monitoring and communicating patient condition; administering chemotherapy, antibiotics, blood and iron infusions, and other therapeutic treatments; following provider orders; advocating for patients; providing ethical and holistic care; and educating patients on disease processes, treatments, and care plans to ensure health literacy.

Requirements

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Graduate of an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of two years of practice as a registered nurse in an acute care setting is preferred but not required.
  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred but not required.
  • Specialty certification is recommended as soon as the RN is eligible including: Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certificate and Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN).
  • Specialty training as required by specific units or specialty includes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Responsibilities

  • Employs Nursing Professional Practice by assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patients’ care.
  • Develops updates and coordinates patient plan of care to achieve patient goals.
  • Optimizes patient outcomes and helps patient transition across the care continuum.
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
  • Performs and maintains essential competencies as required by the department.
  • Administers chemotherapy, antibiotics, blood and iron infusions and any other therapeutic treatments.
  • Follows provider orders in relation to patient care and documents interventions.
  • Advocates for patients to promote a safe and quality patient care.
  • Provides ethical and holistic care by partnering with other health care providers within and outside of the department.
  • Facilitates learning environment for patients to educate them on disease processes and treatments.
  • Helps educate patients on the care being provided to them and the treatment plan they are prescribed.
  • Provides patients with the education material needed to ensure health literacy.
  • Other duties as assigned.
