This specific role is for a Registered Nurse (RN) in Ambulatory Urology, with a focus on serving as a Urinary Catheter Resource Nurse (UCRN). The UCRN acts as a clinical expert and primary resource for urinary catheter management across inpatient and ambulatory settings. This role involves collaboration with nursing, providers, Infection Prevention, and Urology to promote catheter stewardship, reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), and improve patient outcomes through evidence-based practice, education, and consultation. The position is eligible for TN sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program, as recognized by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA. If graduated from a non-accredited program, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required.
  • All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020 and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency (Arizona).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.
  • Prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
  • Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care.
  • Support professional nursing practice across practice settings and the continuum of care.
  • Function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, including planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care.
  • Provide leadership through preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability.
  • Serve as the primary resource for complex catheter management, difficult catheterizations, and high-risk urinary catheter patients.
  • Identify patients at increased risk for CAUTI and facilitate timely interventions and escalation.
  • Support early Urology consultation for chronic Foley catheter patients and those meeting established high-risk criteria.
  • Provide education, coaching, and competency support to clinical teams.
  • Participate in CAUTI prevention initiatives, case reviews, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Promote adherence to catheter indication guidelines, maintenance practices, and CAUTI testing algorithms.
  • Collaborate across inpatient and ambulatory settings to develop individualized bladder management plans and explore catheter alternatives.
  • May be required to drive a personal vehicle as part of the role's responsibilities.
