Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or a temporary permit.
  • The temporary APRN permit allows an APRN applicant to work in a limited capacity for up to 120 days while awaiting review for full APRN licensure by the nursing board.
  • An APRN applicant cannot medically diagnose or medically manage patients until they are licensed and have prescriptive authority.
  • If the APRN license is not received within the 120-day period and the permit expires, the employee must be removed from the position.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive health assessments, obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, and develops individualized plans of care for patients.
  • Provides advanced primary and preventive health care services, including diagnostic evaluations, treatment planning, prescribing medications, and coordinating referrals as needed.
  • Performs specialized clinical procedures such as pap smears, breast and pelvic examinations, STI services, and insertion of Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs).
  • Reviews and analyzes laboratory and diagnostic results to determine diagnoses, evaluate patient responses to treatment, and modify care plans when necessary.
  • Educates and counsels patients, families, and community members regarding health conditions, treatment plans, preventive care, and available health resources.
  • Provides advanced clinical expertise and technical guidance to nurses and ancillary staff while participating in quality assurance activities to improve patient care outcomes and program effectiveness.
  • Maintains accurate medical records and legal documentation, assists in developing practice standards and educational programs, and conducts formal and informal staff training to support quality healthcare delivery.
