Requirements

• Possession of a current Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or a temporary permit.
• The temporary APRN permit allows an APRN applicant to work in a limited capacity for up to 120 days while awaiting review for full APRN licensure by the nursing board.
• An APRN applicant cannot medically diagnose or medically manage patients until they are licensed and have prescriptive authority.
• If the APRN license is not received within the 120-day period and the permit expires, the employee must be removed from the position.

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced primary and preventive health care by conducting comprehensive health assessments, diagnosing conditions, developing treatment plans, and managing patient care in accordance with collaborative practice agreements and Office of Public Health protocols.
• Perform physical examinations and clinical procedures, including family planning, STI services, Pap smears, breast and pelvic exams, and insertion of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs).
• Order, review, and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests; prescribe medications and treatments; and coordinate referrals to ensure comprehensive, patient-centered care.
• Educate and counsel patients, families, and communities on health conditions, treatment plans, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices while connecting individuals with appropriate health resources.
• Provide clinical leadership and technical guidance to nursing and support staff, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and promote evidence-based practices that enhance patient care.
• Maintain accurate medical records, prepare required clinical documentation, develop practice standards, and support staff education through training and professional development activities.
• Collaborate with physicians, healthcare providers, and community partners to evaluate healthcare needs, improve program outcomes, strengthen public health services, and respond to emerging public health priorities and emergencies.
