About The Position

The Registered Nurse in Acute Care & Emergency Room is responsible for the practice of nursing as defined by the State of Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. This includes identifying and intervening in actual or potential health problems of individuals, families, or groups. The role focuses on maintaining health status, preventing illness/injury, improving health status, and providing supportive or restorative care through nursing assessment and the execution of nursing care and diagnostic/therapeutic regimens prescribed by a licensed practitioner. The RN will manage patient flow for Med/Surg, Swing Bed (Skilled), and ER patients.

Requirements

Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively to maintain good working relationships with staff, healthcare providers, and patients.
Must be capable of communicating clearly (reading, writing, and speaking) in the English Language.
Must be proficient in the operation of a personal computer with Microsoft Office and the Internet.
Must be capable of reading and comprehending complex healthcare laws and regulations.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, calculate figures and amounts.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished as written, oral, or schedule form.
Ability to identify responses to actual or potential health conditions.
Will have access to confidential information abiding by the organization’s privacy policies and regulations concerning this information.

Nice To Haves

BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certifications will be required within one year of employment if not already obtained.

Responsibilities

Delivers nursing care utilizing standards of clinical nursing practice.
Collect and assess objective and subjective patient health data through observations, examinations, interviews, and written records, involving the patient, significant others, and health providers in data collection when appropriate.
Establishes nursing diagnosis based on patient condition or needs.
Establishes goals, outcomes, and individualized plans of care in collaboration with the patient, significant others, and other health care providers, when appropriate, to meet the health care needs of the patient.
Prescribes and implements nursing interventions in order to implement the plan of care.
Utilizes ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient condition and needs to revise diagnoses/patient problems, outcomes, and the plan of care as needed.
Implements appropriate care.
Attends to the physical and psychosocial needs of the patient and/or significant others while providing supportive care as they cope with illness, surgery, or illness.
Demonstrates competency in performing nursing skills and following policies and procedures.
Assigns tasks or delegates care based on the needs of the patient and the knowledge and skill of the nursing personnel selected.
Works in harmony with assigned co-workers and other department staff.
Is punctual in attendance.

Prepares complete and concise assessment documentation through flow sheet charting as well as written nurses notes in the EMR.
Documentation should reflect all assessments made, interventions carried out, and evaluations of responses to interventions.
Documents current patient medications through electronic medication reconciliation in the Dr. First program linked to the EMR.
Utilizes BCMA for the administration and second-check of medications during administration to patients.
Reports the potential for unsafe medication delivery/harm using Incident Tracker’s medication error form.
Works in collaboration with ePharmacy and medical staff to calculate drug doses and drip rates in order to administer appropriate doses of medications to patients.
Establishes priorities and organizes work for efficient delivery of patient care.
Demonstrates ability to adapt to changes in work load or patient assignments.
Generation of MAR, documentation in MAR.
Patient admission—able to admit and document all steps of a patient admission according to policy.
Patient Transfer—Able to transfer a patient in an emergency situation and correctly completes all required transfer paperwork according to EMTALA and KCHS policy.
Assists all patients, family members/significant others, physicians, visitors, and employees in a friendly manner.
Introduces self and uses caring, thoughtful words either in person or on the telephone.
Demonstrates ethical and appropriate behavior for a healthcare environment to include, but not limited to, dignity, patient’s rights and privacy, and the maintenance of confidentiality of patient information.

If unable to assist an individual in needs, offers to find someone who can.
Demonstrate proper telephone etiquette.
If transferring a telephone call, announces the caller and briefly explains the situation before ending the transfer.

Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and uses same in practice.
Notifies the Infection Control Nurse of real or potential exposures.
Demonstrates adherence to risk management and safety policies and codes as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practices.
Maintains a clean and safe environment for patient and co-workers.
Follows all general safety rules.
Notified the Safety Director and/or Risk Manager of incidents involving injury or having the potential for injury.
Submits incident reports according to hospital policy.
Completes required careLearning modules.
Attends mandatory Safety/NIMS in-services yearly.
Completes other required certifications or classes as necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
Attends staff meetings or reads and “marks as read” meeting minutes in Policy Tech 100% of the time.
