About The Position

The University of Miami/UHealth department of Neurology has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Registered Nurse 2 to work in Boca Raton, FL. The Registered Nurse 2 delivers patient-family centered care in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service while ensuring population-specific patient care. The Registered Nurse 2 oversees nurses and allied health staff in their daily practice. The RN will be initiative-taking, willing to work as a member of a treatment team and interested in managing a variety of nursing responsibilities both in the infusion center and medical ambulatory clinic which will include providing direct patient care and care coordination while working with the Clinical Experts at the MS Center. Actively supports the MS Center physicians and nurse practitioners. Following infusion protocols, administer standard biotherapy agents and non-chemotherapy medications. Examples include Tysabri, rituximab, IVIg, and Solumedrol. See the attachment for more details. Infusion activities will include, but are not limited to Complete and maintain required training to document competencies Complete source documents (e.g., TOUCH) Review pre-infusion labs and alert the prescriber of abnormal results to obtain clearance prior to each infusion Obtain and record vitals in UChart Establish IV access for infusions Mix and prepare medications prior to administration and pre-medicate as per protocol Report to providers with any new symptoms or side effects, and manage infusion side effects as per protocols Maintain medication log, daily refrigerator temperature as required for quality assurance, medication and supply inventory, including dispensing, returning, recording, and destroying drugs Assist in securing medications, care coordination, and scheduling appointments as needed Participate in research-related activities and/or infusions following completion of dedicated training Supports patients and their families during infusion therapy. Works to educate patients and their families about their treatment and protocol requirements. Utilizes independent learning methods to become knowledgeable about new protocols and protocol changes. Ambulatory Clinic activities include, but are not limited to Educate patients and families about the disease process, treatment options, and potential side effects Maintain medical records up to date/complete all documentation in a timely manner in accordance with policies and as required Responsible for the Boca MS Center in-basket (e.g., triaging messages to providers, answering calls or Mychart messages, etc...) Assist in securing patient medications and scheduling as needed Communicate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and supervisor as needed by phone, email, or in person for problems concerning the patient’s needs, resolution to those needs, and any changes in the patient’s condition and reaction to treatment Attend staff meetings and other meetings, such as patient care planning conferences, as needed This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
  • Valid State of Florida RN license required
  • Refer to department description for applicable certification requirements
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required in infusions (e.g. Chemotherapy or Biologics), Emergency or Critical Care Nursing preferred.
  • Required to Obtain CITI certification within 60 days of hire and maintain certification according to UM policy

  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses assigned patients and evaluates plans to include documentation of nursing care.
  • Reports symptoms and changes in patients’ condition and vital signs.
  • Modifies patient treatment plans as indicated by patients’ responses, conditions and physician orders.
  • Reviews, evaluates and reports diagnostic tests to assess patient’s condition.
  • Consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals related to assigned patients to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Prepares patients for, and assists with examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Considers patient age and culture during patient treatments and provides any needed information regarding treatment plan.
  • Nurtures a compassionate environment by providing psychological support.
  • Performs appropriate patient tests and safely administers medications within the scope of practice.
  • Administers and maintains accurate records related to medications and treatments as per regulatory bodies, policies, procedures and physician orders.
  • Communicates plan of care in a timely manner to patient and family, as well as the appropriate team members, ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines (i.e. HIPAA).
  • Uses best practices for transition of patient care.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
