About The Position

INN is seeking a Per Diem Registered Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist (REEGT) in Des Moines, IA. This role involves performing routine and STAT EEG, AEEG, and cEEG studies, including marking, clipping, and pruning studies, archiving data, and providing descriptive analysis. The technologist will also be responsible for electrode maintenance, daily charging of studies, facilitating report delivery, and assisting in training Neurodiagnostic Assistants.

Requirements

  • R. EEG T credential (Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist) is required.
  • 12 months or more experience in the Neurodiagnostics field, including experience in an ICU setting is required.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathologic processes, and aseptic techniques.
  • Knowledge of electrophysiological equipment used in performing tests on patients along with correct procedures followed in conducting tests and examinations.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with medical staff, patients, visitors, and other hospital employees.
  • Displays vigilance in infection control protocol including hand hygiene, aseptic and sterile technique, and low-level disinfection procedures.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, while concentrating on monitoring computer screen images.
  • Knowledgeable in neuroanatomy relevant to neurodiagnostic procedures.
  • Comprehends accepted abbreviations used in an ICU/cEEG and EMU settings.
  • Stays abreast of updates in ACNS Guidelines and applies changes, as appropriate per protocol.
  • Demonstrates competency in operating neurodiagnostic equipment and troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Ability to work quickly and is proficient when stressful conditions arise.
  • Ability to visually evaluate normal and abnormal adult and pediatric waveforms.
  • Apply basic computer knowledge and data entry skills.
  • Understands networking and is sufficient in basic troubleshooting.
  • Ability to listen to directions, take orders orally and perform a repeat-back procedure.
  • Knowledge to identify common seizure types/epilepsy syndromes and their EEG correlate.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials with rare likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  • Use of personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and face shields.
  • Work requires lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs. and frequent pushing and pulling of up to 20 lbs. including carrying of supplies.
  • Work requires frequent walking, bending, squatting, sitting, and kneeling.
  • Work requires occasional twisting and turning and occasional reaching over the shoulders.
  • Work requires occasional need to get into awkward positions to reach cramped workspaces.
  • Work requires manual dexterity including but not limited to placing and securing electrodes, keyboarding and other manual tasks.
  • Work requires the use of computers for extended periods of time while concentrating on monitoring screen images and typing.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions due to sudden changes in clinical condition.
  • Maintains availability for neurodiagnostic studies during normal working hours.
  • Variable work schedule that may change, dependent upon business needs and adaptation to anticipated or unanticipated coworker time off. Reliability is of upmost importance.
  • Required to maintain focus and clinical judgement at all times during procedures.
  • Participate in conference calls, grand rounds and team meetings as requested by team or manager.
  • Maintains professional behavior at all times with patients, customers, co-workers, and points of contact that occur in this field.
  • Participates in performance improvement and quality assurance projects as requested.
  • Handles ePHI and PHI in a HIPAA compliant manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited program highly desirable.
  • Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Neurodiagnostic Technologist (NDT) Program, or an Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university is desired.
  • Experience in performing adult and pediatric/neonatal neurodiagnostic recordings is preferred.
  • Experience with and knowledge of multiple vendor equipment types is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform neurodiagnostic hookup, calibrate acquisition machine, evaluate and adjust equipment, and optimize recording parameters to acquire relevant data and information.
  • Implement appropriate troubleshooting methods to assure accurate recording of information.
  • Keep onsite equipment clean and free from environmental hazards, and in proper working order, reporting malfunctions.
  • Review patient’s medical history and medications to understand their impact on EEG/EP data and integrate this information into ongoing analysis.
  • Interact with hospital staff and Reading Neurologist to provide interpretive data regarding patient’s neurological status.
  • Provide a technical description/descriptive analysis to the Reading Neurologist, distinguishing between and labeling physiological and non-physiological artifacts.
  • Recognize and mark clinical and subclinical activity, and identify and label normal patterns, normal variants, abnormal patterns, and seizure activity.
  • Use standardized ACNS terminology when creating a technical description.
  • Understand medical and pharmacological/anesthetic conditions that influence the study.
  • Exercise independent judgment in determining when brainwave patterns require the notification of the on-call reading physician.
  • Aid the Neurodiagnostic Assistant to ensure future hook-ups are high quality.
  • Verify recording and electrode integrity, display the most appropriate montage, document all stimulation performed, and identify and document artifact reduction techniques.
  • Input patient information to create database file for neurodiagnostic patients.
  • Accurately document during each patient timeout process, document the most recent neuro assessment observed, and clinical changes as observed.
  • Notate any skin breakdown, according to INN and facility policy.
  • Notate alternative electrode placements, according to INN and facility policy.
  • Communicate and interact professionally with medical staff, patients, visitors, and other hospital employees.
  • Coordinate performance improvement and quality assurance measures by participating in monthly staff meetings and educational opportunities.
  • Ensure timely communication and response to email and cell phone.
  • Participate in conference meetings and video calls as requested.
  • Assist in maintenance of supply inventory and creation of EEG bundle packs.
  • Relay supply inventory levels as appropriate to Department Supervisor.
  • Perform administrative project work as assigned.
  • Assist the INN leadership through training and orientation of newly hired employees.
