About The Position

This position provides individual counseling and case management for WIC participants and Head Start Children who are at high nutritional risk, along with nutrition education quality control. The role involves assessing nutritional status, developing care plans, providing counseling using Motivational Interviewing techniques, documenting progress, and approving medical documentation. The Registered Dietitian will also provide consultation and resources to Head Start families, promote breastfeeding, coordinate nutrition services, and offer technical assistance to other agency staff. Additionally, the role includes teaching group nutrition education classes and participating in early childhood family nights. A significant part of the role involves training and staff development within the WIC program, including overseeing training modules, coordinating continuing education, assessing training needs, and ensuring effective information and services are provided by trained staff through observations. The position also requires providing nutrition assessment information to the Early Childhood Services Department.

Requirements

A Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
A bachelor’s in a health profession, such as nutrition, nursing or health education.
An Oregon Licensed Dietitian (LD); RD eligible also considered, but must pass RD exam within 6 months of employment.
You must be a health professional; A health professional is a person with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a health profession, such as nutrition, nursing or health education. This includes physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, dietitians, public health educators and, lactation consultants that have passed a board certification and are IBCLCs.
You must be a Competent Professional Authority (CPA).
An individual on the staff of the local WIC program authorized to assess program eligibility, determine nutritional risk, provide nutrition education and counseling and prescribe supplemental foods.
Observe, compare, and monitor behaviors, records and data to determine compliance with prescribed standards.
Comprehend, analyze, and make inferences and references from written material.
Lift and move heavy and/or bulky objects up to 50 lbs.
Sit for long periods of time with keyboard and do data entry at a computer.
Occasionally required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
Frequently required to drive, walk and climb stairs in the office and in a variety of community based and home settings.
Occasional filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending as necessary.
Produce written documentation with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
Current enrollment in the Child Care Division’s Central Background Registry.
Current physical examination, drug screen, and TB screen documentation prior to hire.
Desire to work with low income children and their families.
Communicate effectively with staff, families, children, and the public using the telephone and in face to face, one to one, and in group settings.
Fluent in English both verbally and written.

Nice To Haves

A master’s in a health profession, such as nutrition, nursing or health education.
Two years’ experience in Community Nutrition working with Maternal Child Health is recommended, with WIC experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Assess nutritional status and special needs of women, infants and children from health records, dietary questionnaires and knowledge of community nutrition issues.
Provide counseling and develop care plans for women, infants, and children who meet high risk criteria in protocol.
Work with participants and/or their caregivers to help them set their own goal for change using Motivational Interviewing technique.
Record proper SOAP documentation within participant’s TWIST file.
Complete certifications on high risk participants as needed.
Approve completed Medical Documentation Forms as outlined in WIC policy.
Provide consultation to families of Head Start children through a referral system.
Provide resources and education to Head Start families via in person, virtual or phone and on some occasions in the families home.
Maintain confidentiality of all records.
Make referrals to and coordinate care with health care providers and community agencies when appropriate.
Maintain professional standards with update training, as needed.
Ensure breastfeeding is promoted as the first choice for infant feeding.
Keep current with the latest breastfeeding information and inform other local agency staff of new recommendations.
Coordinate with community breastfeeding resources.
Coordinate nutrition services with other WIC Program operations.
Provide technical assistance and consultation to other local agency staff, including chart reviews and development of care plans per certifier request.
Share nutrition education resources and information with staff.
Teach group nutrition education classes as needed.
Provide nutrition education at early childhood family nights as requested.
Comply with all federal, state and local agency policies, procedures and regulations.
Complete Oregon WIC Training Modules as required for position.
Oversees and documents training and staff development within the WIC program.
Works with the state WIC program to implement training initiatives.
Coordinates completion of the appropriate Oregon WIC training modules and online courses by WIC staff in the time frame set out in policy.
Coordinates continuing education for WIC staff, including quarterly in services.
Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates strategies to meet training and staff development needs within the WIC program.
Assures effective, appropriate and accurate information and services are provided to WIC participants by trained WIC staff, by conducting regular onsite staff observations.
Provide the Early Childhood Services Department with Nutrition Assessment information of WIC/Head Start children.
Participate in staff meetings, conferences, training sessions and workshops as assigned.
Demonstrate familiarity with employment policies, performance standards, work plan and objectives of Agency.

Keep current and accurate records and file reports on time.
Maintain confidentiality in regards to staff and family information.
