About The Position

This position provides leadership in clinical nutrition, utilizes and ensures practice standards are met. Serves as a lead for the clinical nutrition department. In addition to managing their own complex caseload of patients by providing nutrition assessments, developing care plans, writing orders within approved standards of practice and monitoring outcomes the lead ensure the daily functions of the nutrition counseling department. The Registered Dietitian Lead will assist with some patient care, but is also a training and education resource for the team. They will interact closely with medical providers, administration, nursing staff, therapy teams, and the culinary department on-site to support patients. This role involves providing comprehensive nutritional assessments, developing appropriate nutrition care plans, monitoring outcomes, providing patient and family nutrition counseling and education, developing Nutrition Standards of Practice and Education material in collaboration with peers, participating in interdisciplinary Health Care teams and providing input into patient care, policies, programs, quality improvement activities and providing in-service education in areas of expertise. University Medical Center Phoenix is a nationally recognized academic medical center focused on coordinated clinical care, expanded research activities and nurturing future generations of highly trained medical professionals. The Phoenix campus has over 730 licensed beds, several unique specialty units and is the new home for medical discoveries, thanks to its collaboration with the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. Additionally, the campus responsibilities include fully integrated multi-specialty and sub-specialty clinics.

Requirements

  • Must possess knowledge of nutrition and dietetics demonstrated through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or equivalent coursework.
  • Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) based on academic and professional requirements as defined by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Must hold current registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and be able to maintain ongoing registration while providing verification of registration annually.
  • Maintains current licensure as required by State law.
  • Must possess a level of expertise typically achieved through three to five years of clinical experience.
  • Must be able to function independently, effectively prioritize assigned patient load and have the ability to lead the clinical team in their daily functions as well as serve as a resource for issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of nutrition support is required (TPN and Tube Feeding calculations and parenteral macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients).

Nice To Haves

  • 3 yrs of acute care setting experience preferred
  • Previous healthcare leadership experience.
  • Additional certification not required but is a preferred.
  • Additional related education and/or experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive nutrition assessment of patients’ nutritional needs. Obtains timely and appropriate data and analyzes/interprets data using evidenced based standards.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of care plan and participates in communicating effectively as a member of the healthcare team to provide optimal nutrition outcomes. Provides pertinent information in the electronic medical record including plans of care and/or clinical pathways while meeting the requirements of regulatory agencies (TJC, CMS, State and Local Agencies).
  • Provides nutrition education to patients, families, staff and other healthcare team members. Serves on system committees to participate in the development of teaching materials and/or in-service programs. Effectively evaluates the receivers’ response to education.
  • Provides leadership to the clinical nutrition team. Establishes and maintains proper patient care procedures with other members of the clinical nutrition team. Acts as a liaison between the clinical nutrition staff other members of the healthcare team when necessary.
  • Assists with program marketing through the development of excellent working relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Participates, develops, collects, and responds to results of continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities in clinical areas to improve the quality of nutrition outcomes. Provides coordination of projects and programs.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in area of practice. Responsible for developing and providing training/educational resources to clinical nutrition staff.
  • Ensures proper scheduling of clinical nutrition staff to maintain coverage to meeting system and regulatory requirements.
