Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduated from ADA-accredited dental assisting program and registered dental assistant certificate/degree required.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification (must be American Heart Association or Red Cross accredited program).
  • Compliance with state dental practice requirements: X-ray certification, 8-hour OSHA/Infection Control training, coronal polishing certification, and sealant certification.
  • Must have Hepatitis B series completed.
  • Minimum of one-year experience required.
  • Dental Terminology required.
  • Digital X-ray and Electronic Dental Record Knowledge required.
  • As a requirement of this position, you must receive EPIC certification for the module you have been hired into.
  • Ability to answer phones, communicate with patients and staff.
  • Must be able to perform the everyday tasks (typing, assisting, walking, etc.) required of position.
  • Knowledge of general office methods, including electronic health or dental record.
  • Must be able to communicate with all levels of staff and patients.
  • Ability to complete work assigned with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patients.
  • Ability to write accurate and clear documentation.
  • Ability to work independently, handling multiple tasks simultaneously, organize work with minimal supervision, set priorities and accomplish job responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of dental terminology and treatments.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Must not now or in the future require sponsorship for employment visas.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years preferred experience.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge about enrolling patients in health plans in the county preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists dentists during patient treatment through updating patient medical and dental histories, recording vitals, diagnostic imaging, demonstrating four handed techniques during surgical and non-surgical procedures, and properly updating and recording in patient's dental tooth chart and inputting dental treatment plan to be rendered.
  • Assures integrity of documentation from dentist's assessment.
  • Maintains operating field through evacuation, washing, isolation, drying, and illuminating as needed and appropriate.
  • Able to prepare dental materials such as cements, bases, and impression materials with minimum waste or need for duplication.
  • Under direct supervision of a dentist: ability to educate and demonstrate oral hygiene techniques for patients and perform coronal polishing and fluoride application as needed.
  • Ability to apply dental sealants efficiently, with proper technique, after appropriate diagnosis from dentist.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently with front-office staff in regard to patient's medical referrals, dental specialty referrals, and updates or changes to treatment plan in regard to patient care.
  • Ability to understand fixed and removable prosthodontic lab cases, documenting and filling out lab slips per doctor recommendations, and checks patient cases ahead of time to ensure cases have been returned for patient care.
  • Protects patients and staff from cross contamination by performing proper infection control in accordance with OSHA and department guidelines.
  • Maintains dental units and operatories by cleaning dental rooms, wiping down non-sterile items used and placing and removing barriers between each patient encounter.
  • Maintain safe waterline quality for patient care safety through shocking all dental waterlines monthly, treating daily, and testing quarterly to meet CDC compliance.
  • Maintains written logs in accordance with department policy.
  • Properly maintain and clean equipment and instruments (i.e. high and slow speed hand pieces, digital sensors, ultrasonic etc.), by following manufacturer and department guidelines.
  • Assures maintenance of all equipment and instruments, and trouble shoots equipment breakdowns and assesses for solutions.
  • Cleans and sterilizes equipment and instruments by using disinfectant wipes and sprays and places in sterilization room.
  • Managing clinical supplies in operatories and maintains adequate stock for intended patient procedures, informing leadership of any shortages for ordering supplies.
  • Efficiently manages patient flow by escorting them to and from appropriate waiting areas, accurate and efficient preparation and maintenance of patient operatory for intended visit/procedure, and timely documentation of care rendered, referrals as needed, and communication for patient, parents, schools, caregivers etc.
