Registered Dental Assistants perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties. The primary role is to assist the dentist in gaining the patient’s commitment to the best possible treatment, with urgency. This includes using x-ray time to promote the dentist’s qualities, learning patients’ expectations while educating them with intra-oral pictures, using effective and anticipatory chair-side skills, and supporting the dentist’s diagnosis when patients ask questions. The RDA must follow procedures required for compliance with state and federal safety regulations, infection control, and permitted duties. The position also involves maintaining a clean, sterile, and cheerful environment, preparing patients for treatment, assisting doctors, taking x-rays and intra-oral pictures at the dentist’s direction, and instructing patients on postoperative and general oral health care.
