About The Position

The Registered Dental Assistant is responsible for preparing the patient for treatment and assisting the dentist with various clinical procedures. This role involves supporting patient flow, performing initial patient assessments, assisting in dental procedures, and maintaining operatory readiness. Advanced duties may be performed under general supervision, and the role may involve operating a mobile dental unit. Adherence to attendance policies and flexibility to work at different locations are also key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • Proof of completion of high school with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or completion of General Educational Development (GED) with a minimum overall score of 162.5.
  • Health care-related knowledge frequently acquired through completion of a trade school, para-professional, or certificate-type program.
  • Two years of experience or successful completion of a dental assistant externship with Family HealthCare Network.
  • Proof of completing a Radiation Safety Course.
  • Ability to prepare more complex documents in Microsoft Word, including creating tables, charts, graphs and other elements.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel to review and compile data, including the use of formulas, functions, lookup tables and other standard spreadsheet elements.
  • Ability to create basic presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Licensed as a Registered Dental Assistant in the state of California.

  • A coronal polish certificate is recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting and monitoring patient flow in the back office, including scrubbing appointments, assisting in patient distribution, informing patients of wait times, and understanding front office workflows to assist with scheduling.
  • Performing initial aspects of the patient visit, such as greeting patients, escorting them to the operatory, obtaining vital signs and patient data, reviewing and updating health records, documenting in the electronic health record, assuring completion of consent forms, operating dental radiographic equipment, and disinfecting/preparing the operatory.
  • Performing supportive dental procedures under general supervision, including sterilizing instruments, assisting the dentist during treatment, ensuring patient comfort, providing post-treatment instructions, providing oral health education, and explaining procedures to patients.
  • Performing various aspects of patient visit, including taking impressions, applying topical agents, removing post-extraction and periodontal dressings, applying topical fluoride, and placing/removing rubber dams and matrices.
  • Performing other duties as assigned or required for quality of care, such as communicating with patients and suppliers, preparing and stocking operatories, discarding biohazard waste, testing and cleaning sterilization equipment, cleaning water lines, maintaining logs, and assisting in other operatories or front office as needed.
  • Performing advanced duties under general supervision of a dentist, including mouth-mirror inspections, placement and removal of temporary sedative dressings, drying canals, testing pulp vitality, placing bases and liners, removing excess cement, sizing crowns and bands, fabricating temporary crowns, temporary cementation and removal of temporary crowns, placement of post-extraction and periodontal dressings, applying and activating bleaching agents, taking bite registrations, coronal polishing, and application of pit and fissure sealants.
  • Using caries detection devices and materials for diagnosis. May also be responsible for maintenance of the mobile dental unit, including cleaning, restocking, dumping septic tanks, refueling, driving the unit, maintaining vehicle logs, assisting disabled passengers, and reporting vehicle issues.
  • Adhering to the Attendance and Absenteeism Policy, recognizing that regular attendance is an essential function of all FHCN positions.
  • Presenting to and working at any FHCN location, both at the beginning of a shift or during a shift, based on business need.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
