This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses who have greater than 12 months experience. Provides and coordinates independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. The Registered Nurse (RN) in Labor & Delivery provides independent care to the unit specific patient population, serves as a clinical resource for others, utilizes and integrates evidence into practice, and functions effectively in roles specific to the unit. They are accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care, and to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit. The RN serves as an effective primary coordinating nurse, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient/family needs. They also assist in team development and evaluation of Patient and Family Centered Care, suggest methods for improvement, and participate in data collection related to outcomes. The RN participates in the implementation of Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI), and contributes to Performance Improvement, Evidence Based Practice, or research at the unit level. They support charge nurse decisions and may perform the charge role for assigned shifts. Additionally, the RN assists in the development of clinical practice protocols and standards for the unit, and orients Clinical Nurse I to the unit level decision making structure and councils. For professional development, the RN serves as a preceptor, coach, and mentor to new nurses and students, contributes to ancillary personnel skills and development, and attends educational offerings and in-services independently.
