About The Position

The Regional Sanitation Manager (RSM) is responsible for assisting, developing, and directing the Sanitation program, ensuring all current Food Safety Standards are met throughout the platform. The RSM will provide technical support in sanitation excellence to reduce microbiological and chemical risks and prevent product contamination. The role involves training and developing plant sanitation employees and management. Through auditing, the RSM will identify risks, provide guidance to control sanitation and GMP issues, and enforce food safety standards. The RSM will communicate sanitation deviations or risks to relevant stakeholders including the Director of Food Safety and Sanitation, Regional Director of Quality, Plant Manager, Quality Manager, Maintenance Manager, Business Unit Manager, Shipping Manager, and Plant Sanitation Staff. The RSM reports to the Director of Food Safety and Sanitation and provides dotted line support for Sanitation Managers within the platform. This is a remote role with significant travel, requiring residence in or near Downers Grove, IL, or one of the Illinois plant locations.

Requirements

  • 5 plus years of experience in the food industry.
  • At least 5 years as a Sanitation/Quality Manager.
  • Knowledge of Master Sanitation Plan implementation (Sanitation Prerequisite Programs, Sanitation Preventive Controls, GMPs) and other legal requirements for the food industry.
  • Working knowledge of FDA and USDA sanitation requirements.
  • Working knowledge of GMP’s, HACCP, Allergens, and Environmental Monitoring.
  • Working knowledge of GFSI auditing schemes: BRC and SQF.
  • Familiarity with chemical and microbiological measures used for verification and validation of sanitation (e.g., allergen free and microbiologically sanitary).
  • Understanding of the 10 principles of sanitary equipment design.
  • Understanding and ability to implement the 7 steps of dry and wet sanitation.
  • Knowledge of pest control measures in dry and wet food processing environments.
  • Good understanding of commercial food processing equipment.
  • Some understanding of OSHA requirements.
  • Demonstrated good record in developing and maintaining programs and handling conflicts with a positive and practical attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and assist in the development and maintenance of Sanitation programs (MSS, daily sanitation, SSOPs, HACCP, Allergen, etc.) for various products in compliance with customer and government regulations.
  • Work with Regional and Plant Safety Managers to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Assist with consumer complaint issues and lead plant teams to minimize complaints.
  • Monitor plant sanitation KPIs for trends that may impact product safety.
  • Collaborate with Continuous Improvement to develop and sustain more efficient work methods while maintaining product safety.
  • Participate in Kaizen events as a subject matter expert.
  • Assist in the development of Sanitation standard work procedures and paperwork.
  • Build strong working relationships with Plant Managers and Quality Managers.
  • Work with the Quality Manager to identify sanitation or regulation issues at assigned facilities.
  • Support plant sanitation management in preparing for Third Party or Customer inspections by conducting audits of paperwork and facilities.
  • Assist with policy, procedures, and paperwork to ensure all Regulatory, Company, and Customer standards are achieved in assigned plants.
  • Foster an environment that allows for the development of supervisors and managers.
  • Audit and refine the Master Sanitation Schedule and attendant KPIs for assigned facilities.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining Sanitation budgets.
  • Manage and escalate issues with Sanitation chemical and pest control suppliers.
  • Work with the Plant Quality Manager and Sanitation management to identify and correct sanitation or environmental issues at assigned facilities.
  • Ensure all chemicals used in the plant are approved for use, and that all chemicals have current SDS and label information on site.
  • Provide responsible oversight of the pest control program for assigned facilities.
  • Perform other duties as identified or assigned by the Director of Food Safety and Sanitation.
