About The Position

The Ferrous Trader is responsible for maximizing the value of ferrous scrap purchased across Texas, Alabama, and Florida by strategically marketing and selling material to domestic mills, exporters, foundries, and other end users. The role is accountable for ensuring purchased positions are effectively covered and sold at or above prevailing market levels through disciplined trading, strong customer relationships, and proactive market intelligence. This position plays a critical role in balancing inbound supply flows with outbound sales commitments, optimizing margin performance, managing commercial risk, and maintaining long-term customer and supplier partnerships across specific states and wider national markets.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven ability to meet or exceed established objectives
  • Strong understanding of ferrous metals
  • Sound knowledge of operational processes in scrap handling and processing
  • Strong commercial acumen, including P&L understanding
  • High level of data literacy (T2 or equivalent systems) with ability to translate data into insight and action
  • Proven ability to build, maintain, and leverage strong relationships with mills, exporters, brokers, carriers, and industry contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate pricing, freight, specifications, and commercial terms that protect and enhance company profitability.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across customers, suppliers, and internal teams.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • 10 years’ experience in commercial industry

Responsibilities

  • Market and sell ferrous scrap volumes to domestic and export consumers across assigned territories.
  • Negotiate pricing, freight, delivery terms, and specifications to maximize margin and inventory turnover.
  • Ensure all purchased tons are strategically covered through forward sales, spot transactions, or contractual arrangements.
  • Monitor and react to changing ferrous market conditions, mill buying programs, export activity, freight trends, and regional demand shifts.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with steel mills, brokers, exporters, foundries, and key industry participants.
  • Serve as a trusted commercial contact for customers by ensuring timely communication, problem resolution, and dependable execution.
  • Provide regular market insight, pricing guidance, and strategic recommendations to leadership, operational and commercial teams.
  • Identify arbitrage opportunities, new customer channels, and regional demand trends to improve commercial performance.
  • Maintain visibility on inventory positions, aging tons, shipment schedules, and sales commitments.
  • Maintain full commercial coverage of inventory positions with minimal exposure to unsold or aged material.
  • Deliver timely and accurate market intelligence to support pricing and procurement decisions.
  • Minimize commercial risk associated with market volatility, freight fluctuations, and inventory imbalances.
  • Identify and develop new sales channels and strategic trading opportunities within regional markets.
