Refuse Collector
About The Position
Performs manual work collecting and disposing of refuse, recyclables, and bulky items from residential and commercial locations. Work includes loading materials into collection vehicles, operating packer equipment, directing traffic as needed, and assisting with unloading at disposal sites. Duties are performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, require physical effort, and must follow established safety procedures. Work is performed under regular supervision. The position requires at least six months of experience performing heavy manual labor, a valid State of Florida Class E driver’s license with no more than six points in a three-year period, and abstaining from tobacco use for at least one year before hire and throughout employment, both on and off duty. A final offer is contingent on successful completion of a criminal background check, employment verification, physical examination, drug and alcohol screening, and motor vehicle report check.
Requirements
- At least six months of experience performing heavy manual labor.
- Valid State of Florida Class E driver’s license with no more than six points in a three-year period.
- Must have abstained from cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products for at least one year before the hire date and must abstain from tobacco products throughout employment, both on and off duty.
- Knowledge of solid waste and recyclable collection methods and procedures.
- Knowledge of safe work practices related to refuse collection and equipment operation.
- Knowledge of basic traffic safety practices when working on roadways and in congested areas.
- Knowledge of proper lifting techniques and injury prevention practices.
- Knowledge of disposal site procedures and basic sanitation standards.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting, carrying, and dumping refuse containers.
- Ability to work safely around moving vehicles, traffic, and mechanical equipment.
- Ability to follow oral instructions and established safety procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with crew members and the public as needed.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to maintain attention to safety, efficiency, and cleanliness during collection operations.
- Must be able to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to wear safety glasses, goggles, a safety harness, safety shoes or boots, hearing protectors, a face shield, and gloves.
- Must complete post-offer, pre-employment criminal background check, employment verification, physical examination, drug and alcohol screening, and motor vehicle report check.
Responsibilities
- Collect refuse containers, trash, and recyclables from residences and businesses and empty them into the truck.
- Operate packer equipment.
- Replace container lids and clean the area around cans.
- Collect discarded furniture, household appliances, limbs, brush, leaves, and other items placed at the curb.
- Direct traffic and guide the truck operator in congested areas.
- Assist with unloading the truck at the disposal site.
- Assist the driver in checking the truck and packer for proper operation.
- Clean refuse trucks and equipment.
- Perform related tasks as required.
