About The Position

The Michigan Department of Corrections is seeking a Refrigeration Mechanic to inspect, plan, and coordinate the installation, repair, and preventative maintenance of refrigeration equipment and HVAC systems. This role requires compliance with all applicable department policies, procedures, MIOSHA standards, and laws. The position involves instructing and supervising prisoners in performing these duties, developing material orders and specifications, monitoring material inventories, and processing work requests and preventative maintenance databases. Ninety percent of the duties are performed within the secure perimeter of the facility with prisoner contact.

Requirements

• Completion of high school.
• Five years of experience in the HVAC or refrigeration mechanic trade (heating and cooling, hydronic heating, refrigeration cooling, or mechanical contractor or inspector).
• One year of experience equivalent to a Refrigeration Mechanic E9.
• The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996.

Nice To Haves

• Completion of a vocational training program in refrigeration mechanics that includes commercial or industrial level instruction may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades people.
