About The Position

The Department of Emergency & Military Affairs (DEMA) is seeking a Refrigeration Mechanic to install and maintain heating, air-conditioning, and ventilation equipment for logistics funded Arizona Army National Guard Facilities. This role involves working with a variety of HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handlers, ventilation systems, heat pumps, and heaters. The position requires the ability to diagnose issues with freon and natural gases, as well as electrical problems ranging from switches to motors. The successful candidate will actively participate in promoting a continuous improvement workplace culture through teamwork, root cause problem solving, standard operating procedures, and performance metric reviews.

Requirements

• Knowledge of troubleshooting different types of HVAC equipment and components that support them, electrically, relays, circuitry and the controls which activate refrigeration units.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics of electrical circuits to analyze refrigeration malfunctions using performance and test equipment.
• Extensive knowledge of safety procedures in working with or near potentially dangerous high voltage services.
• Knowledge of codes, standards and regulations pertaining to the repair, modification and replacement of HVAC services, fixtures, and apparatus.
• Knowledge of the operation of specialized building automation, HVAC controls, and their respective systems.
• Basic knowledge of how air flow is supposed to work in a building or specified area.
• Skilled in refrigeration mechanics and able to utilize electrical and HVAC diagnostic equipment.
• Skilled in electrical mechanics and use of electrical diagnostic equipment.
• Skilled in the use of various HVAC manual tools, including but not limited to drills, grinders, sanders, sheet metal shears, saws, and welding torches.
• Skilled in maintaining and repairing various types of building automation and energy controls.
• Skilled in diagnosing and troubleshooting repairs of various electronic controls and systems.
• Ability to build, from components, electrical service entrance sections from 50 to 1500 amps.
• Ability to make mechanical estimates from blueprints and specifications.
• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical components, including HVAC equipment.
• Ability to analyze electrical/mechanical malfunctions using performance and test equipment.
• Ability to diagnose defective printed circuit boards, estimate repair costs, and customize electrical designs.
• Must be able to work outdoors and in different climatic conditions, to work indoors in confined quarters and to climb ladders and work at heights.
• Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid Arizona state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Ability to achieve a favorable Tier 1 investigation for the purpose of obtaining/maintaining a Common Access Card (CAC) within one year of hire.
• Requires the possession of a Universal EPA Certificate within 1 year from the date of hire.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair malfunctions in heating and cooling equipment and controls.
• Perform preventive maintenance and repair of electrical and mechanical heating and cooling components, electronic environmental controls, and monitoring systems, as well as Generators, cooling tower systems with refrigeration compressors and condenser package heat pump units, exhaust fans, window air-conditioning units, split HVAC systems chillers, boilers (Naturals Gas, Propane, Fuel oil), Evaporative Coolers, Thermostatic controls, space, and radiant heaters.
• Install various HVAC Equipment and controls.
• Service HVAC controls and equipment, modify schematics and install special electronic/electrical wiring projects, control units on new and existing equipment to meet the needs of the agency’s statewide energy programs. Specialized electrical/electronic systems include but are not limited to fuel cells, photo-voltaic arrays.
• Install miscellaneous heating and cooling equipment.
• Procure and stock heating and cooling equipment parts and supplies.
• Keep accurate records of work performed, fill out time sheets, expense vouchers, travel claims, vehicle reports, or other routine agency reports.
• Confer with superiors, present and resolve difficult problems and discuss plans and actions.
