About The Position

Refrigeration Mechanic work at the journeyman level in the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration equipment. An employee in this classification services air conditioning systems and units, cold storage plants, refrigerators, water cooling systems and related equipment utilized in a wide variety of facilities and buildings. Employees work independently using hand tools, power tools and various precision-measuring and testing instruments.

Requirements

  • Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment.
  • Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver License and satisfactory driving record.
  • Must have a clean driving record, free from major traffic offenses (e.g., accidents, DUIs, traffic violations, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • High School diploma is strongly preferred.
  • Valid Miami-Dade Certificate of Competency as a Journeyman in General Mechanical or a Journeyman in Air-Conditioning Unlimited license is preferred.
  • A Type I, type II, or Universal certification from an EPA recognized certification program in refrigerant transition and recovery service practices.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains simple job records and equipment service records.
  • Assists Unit Supervisor in planning modification and new installation projects, helps prepare specifications, for major overhauling and reconditioning jobs.
  • Checks gauges and makes inspection for preventive maintenance.
  • Verifies the absence of refrigerant leaks then adds gas to refrigeration units.
  • Adjusts or changes belts, replaces gaskets, hinges, and hardware. Installs, repairs, and removes and replaces motors, thermostats, humidistats, and adjusts expansion valves.
  • Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings, and couplings.
  • Tests refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks.
  • Overhauls, and service refrigeration units by repairing, replacing, or adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps.
  • May be responsible for transporting sensitive medical supplies, equipment, or medications that require careful handling, timely delivery, and adherence to specific risk protocols (as applicable).

  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
