About The Position

Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a Refinery Mechanic to support the Dickinson Renewable Diesel Facility located in North Dakota. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of mechanical equipment in the refinery. Mechanics install, monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair various types of rotating mechanical equipment in the refinery. The successful candidate will be an active part of a culture that promotes ethical practices and legal compliance, encourages customer service, individual integrity, safety, teamwork, and employee innovation and accountability. This position is located in Dickinson, ND and reports to the Machinery & Mechanical Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associates degree in a related field or equivalent mechanical experience.
  • Minimum of two years of refinery mechanical (or similar process plant) experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience working with rotating mechanical refinery equipment preferred.
  • Experience in the use of computerized maintenance software systems and understanding of Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) manuals.
  • Must have strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be willing to operate various types of equipment to support assigned job tasks, including not limited to cranes, aerial lifts, forklifts, etc.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime for various plant emergencies or outages as needed to ensure continuous safe and environmentally compliant plant production.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be capable of communicating within all levels of the organization.
  • Must be willing to climb ladders, work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Must have ability to physically perform all duties required which may involve (among others): bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, lifting and carrying loads up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have computer skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Must be able to work efficiently and safely alone as well as part of a team.
  • Must successfully complete a rigorous pre-employment assessment process, drug/alcohol and medical screenings, and a background check.
  • New hires must also successfully complete maintenance qualification training and participate in random drug and alcohol screenings.

Responsibilities

  • Install, monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair various types of rotating mechanical refinery equipment including but not limited to compressors, pumps, blowers, condensers, fans, cooling towers, exchangers, etc.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on rotating equipment and minor leak repairs/isolations on fixed equipment and piping in the facility.
  • Reassemble and reinstall pumps and pump seals with associated tubing.
  • Change oil, check alignment, exchange fan belts, check coupling guards, balance pump shafts, and inspect seal pots replacing parts as needed.
  • Perform vibration testing and record vibration reading measurements.
  • Perform maintenance and overhauls of compressors under supervision of an engineer.
  • Remove pumps and perform minor machining on parts as necessary using a lathe and minor millwork.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and lubrication on rotating equipment components (couplings, belts, motors, blower cooling systems).
  • Maintain cooling tower mechanical systems (shiv condition/replacement, fan/motor lubrication, blade pitch/coupling checks, gearbox fill lines/levels).
  • Monitor compressor component tolerances and fit (pistons, piston valves, rods, packing installation and fit).
  • Install blinds for lock out tag out and safe off for equipment inspections and maintenance.
  • Perform replacement of 3” screwed metallic piping and glued PVC piping, mainly in water circuits.
  • Complete repairs on heat exchangers related to compressor coolers.
  • Torque heads on leaking process heat exchangers using electric and hydraulic torque wrenches.
  • Provide project coordination, as required, when projects requiring a small crew are in progress at the facility.
  • Help train company personnel in the operation and maintenance of various types of mechanical equipment.
  • Responsible for waste management activities including removing, handling, labeling, and storage of hazardous materials.
  • Conduct sampling of hazardous waste.
  • Complete initial, annual, and re-fresher training as required by Waste Management Procedures.
  • Respond to upsets involving hazardous waste and complete initial, annual, and re-fresher training identified in the DKR Emergency Response Plan.
  • Communicate corrective actions and recommendations concerning emissions, controls and maintenance issues to department and environmental staff as required.
