About The Position

The Library of North Carolina is seeking a well-rounded Reference Services Assistant to join our team! The Reference Services Assistant position provides basic direct reference assistance to researchers on-site in the North Carolina Government & Heritage Library as well as through telephone, online chat, and email contact. This position processes Interlibrary loan requests and provides office and library support through management of office equipment, computers, and supplies; maintenance of collections and signage; shelving materials; compilation of statistical reports; photocopying of handouts; preparation and mailing of correspondence; and other assistance as needed. This position has the potential for hybrid work with a minimum of four days per week onsite.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in library services, office support or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have a valid NC driver’s license.
  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 30 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with library research, including library catalogs and/or research databases.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering in-person and/or virtual instruction, training, or public speaking.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting researchers in one of the following disciplines: North Carolina history, government, and/or family history.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Interlibrary Loan.

Responsibilities

  • Providing assistance to researchers on-site in the Government & Heritage Library.
  • Participating in online reference services, including email and chat.
  • Performing circulation tasks including registering clients for Government & Heritage Library cards, renewing accounts, and troubleshooting and reporting account access issues.
  • Collects and compiles various statistics as directed by the Reference Services Supervisor.
  • Processing Interlibrary Loan lending requests.
  • Contributing to library education, outreach, and marketing efforts by assisting in the development of educational materials, displays, and programs; staffing virtual and in-person events; and writing social media posts.
  • Participating in library cross-functional teams.
