About The Position

Are you interested in working on engineering challenges associated with the reentry systems deployed as part of our Nation’s premiere strategic ballistic missile and long-range strike hypersonic weapon systems? Do you enjoy solving challenging problems with a multi-talented team of engineers? If so, we’re looking for someone like you to join our team at JHU/APL. We are seeking an engineer to help us perform developmental design assessments, performance assessments, and data analysis for strategic reentry systems. These reentry systems are an integral part of our Nation’s strategic deterrent and may contain conventional or nuclear warheads. As a member of the team, you will help to scope and guide analysis and participate in the integration and testing of various reentry systems.

Requirements

  • B.S. in a relevant engineering field (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of key reentry subject areas such as aerodynamic performance, flight dynamics, and/or subsystem/component performance and demonstrated experience applying this knowledge in a professional capacity
  • Experience or knowledge in design, integration, and/or testing of hypersonic and/or nuclear deterrent systems
  • Familiarity with Reentry System design, production, and testing, including flight testing
  • Strong computer experience and programming skills, including MATLAB and SIMULINK
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, evaluate alternatives and implement solutions
  • Able to work and effectively interact with colleagues and multi-disciplinary teams both internally and externally of different experience levels and backgrounds including industry and military personnel
  • Willing and able to travel occasionally to attend meetings and/or field tests at other government contractor sites (approx. 30-35 days per year)
  • Comfortable working in closed area facilities
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Initiative, interest in skill development (both your own skills and the skills of others), and the flexibility to accept assignments of varied scope and skill
  • Hold a Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. Citizenship

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate degree in engineering and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Previous experience with Navy and/or Air Force strategic reentry systems (i.e., ICBM and/or SLBM weapon systems)
  • An extensive background in some or all of the following categories: Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis (MS&A), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), aerothermal analysis, aerodynamics, aerospace vehicle dynamics, flight test engineering, vehicle functional performance analysis, and/or requirements management/verification.
  • Previous design and/or analysis experience for related missile and reentry subsystems
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories, plants, and partner organizations.
  • Experience with stockpile or developmental nuclear deterrent systems, including experience working with flight test articles such as Joint Test Assemblies (JTAs)
  • Experience with bench, laboratory and flight body instrumentation, including data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Currently have an active Top Secret Clearance

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engineering analysis and assess the performance of reentry systems
  • Lead trade studies on various aspects of reentry systems
  • Review & analyze reentry system design, production, flight test data to understand system performance
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to advise government and industry partners on engineering challenges and design trades
  • Produce reports and presentations to communicate findings to team members and stakeholders, including government and industry partners
  • Have the opportunity to work on reentry systems throughout all phases of the product life-cycle from development through deployment and retirement
