About The Position

Under general direction and within guidelines set by policies, rules, and regulations, this position is responsible for operating recycling trucks and other heavy vehicles used in Public Works for the collection of recyclable materials. The Crew Chief Recycling may be required to perform labor duties and assist in other areas within Public Works as assigned. This position supervises other employees of a lower classification assigned to them as laborers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, preferably with experience in recyclables and experience in the operation of garbage and trash trucks, and related equipment ; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Must maintain regular attendance on the job.
  • Must be able to work on call and overtime as necessary.
  • Possession of a valid, State of Alabama driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions in equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City, including the locations of streets or the ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly.
  • Knowledge of City ordinances, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs).
  • Skill in planning and organizing work.
  • Skill in utilizing such office equipment as a calculator, typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to operate recycling, garbage and trash trucks safely and in accordance with applicable traffic laws and regulations.
  • Ability to make minor adjustments and repairs and provide service to equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work, year round, in all types of weather.
  • Ability to sufficiently move in and around confined spaces and rough terrain.
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and separates materials into designated bins.
  • Offloads materials at designated recycling facility.
  • Maintains all records and documentation as it pertains to recycling.
  • Operates all equipment in lower classifications.
  • Drives trucks engaged in the collection of recyclable materials ; drives trucks on designated routes for collection; drives other trucks within Public Works as assigned.
  • Maneuvers and back large trailers for the collection of recyclable materials safely.
  • Supervises the collection of recyclables, and any other assigned employees, and ensures that crews are working in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Services equipment (including washing) and makes minor field adjustments and repairs; reports all mechanical issues, which might need maintenance and/or repair to superintendent.
  • Inspects trailer daily to ensure safe loading, transportation and delivery of recyclables.
  • Performs other reasonably duties in a safe manner as assigned by immediate supervisor or other supervisors as required.
