About The Position

The Recreational Therapist will be responsible for assessing the recreational needs of Special Education students, developing and implementing therapeutic interventions, and creating comprehensive programs to enhance students' life skills. This role involves active participation in IEP and ITP meetings, collaborating with various stakeholders, and making recommendations for inclusive recreational opportunities. The therapist will also ensure seamless integration of recreational services into students' educational plans through detailed progress reports and maintain strong communication with school personnel, parents, and external agencies.

Requirements

  • 2+ Years Experience providing recreational therapy in schools, medical centers, hospitals, and agencies.
  • Certified as CTRS or RTC.
  • Strong Knowledge of school recreational therapy principles, IDEA, and Special Education programs.
  • Expert in Student Development across recreational, intellectual, social, and emotional areas.
  • Skilled in Therapeutic Techniques and using/maintaining therapy materials.
  • Professional and capable of representing LAUSD and the field of therapy with integrity.
  • Effective Communicator with students, parents, and staff.
  • Culturally Competent in working with diverse backgrounds.
  • Physically & Mentally Fit for the role per Education Code Section 44839.

Responsibilities

  • Assess Special Education students' recreational needs and identify opportunities for recreation therapy and leisure education.
  • Offer strategic, goal-oriented recommendations for each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Design and implement therapeutic interventions tailored to individual student needs to achieve academic, physical, and recreational goals.
  • Develop and refine instructional programs to enhance students' physical, social, cognitive, and emotional skills, fostering independence in recreation and leisure activities.
  • Attend and contribute to IEP and team meetings, documenting student assessments, progress, and goal attainment.
  • Lead the development of Individualized Transition Plans (ITP), identifying recreational and leisure goals for community integration and independent living.
  • Serve as a liaison between school personnel, parents, and external agencies to ensure a shared understanding of student progress and needs.
  • Assess school-based recreation programs and recommend strategies for the inclusion of students with disabilities to enhance equitable access to recreational activities.
