About The Position

The Rehab Services staff recreational therapist provides evaluation and treatment of leisure needs for hospital inpatient rehab programs. This role is responsible for maintaining good rapport and cooperative relationships, approaching conflict constructively, and helping to identify and resolve problems. The therapist must maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital information and behave in accordance with the Code of Conduct, Service Excellence Standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, and policies of Chelsea Hospital. They are expected to perform job duties safely, assure personal and coworker safety, and report hazards. The role involves self-directed learning and providing quality patient care by considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. The therapist will demonstrate unit/area competencies, identify and assist in resolving safety, sanitation, and maintenance issues, and practice effective communication. They will promote a positive work environment through teamwork, orient patients and families to Recreational Therapy, facilitate patient and family participation in leisure activities, and instruct them in community resources for leisure options after discharge. The therapist will prepare appropriate activities for patients in inpatient rehab units, facilitate the Stroke Support Group monthly, and other recreational groups regularly. Thorough, timely documentation of patient interactions is required, adhering to state law and accrediting agency requirements. Daily charges must be completed while adhering to ethical practices and insurance guidelines. The therapist will work with management and scheduling staff to ensure schedules achieve targeted productivity and clinic budget, and participate in staff meetings.

Requirements

  • Requires Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Maintains current certification in Recreation Therapy from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
  • Six to twelve months related experience.
  • Knowledge of current theory and practice in therapeutic and rehabilitative recreation.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and families when providing therapy and with physicians and other treatment team members when gathering and exchanging patient progress information.
  • Analytical skills necessary to design therapeutic recreational activities to meet desired objective, observe and note significant patient behaviors, evaluate effectiveness of program and administer approved budget.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 50% of work time when observing and instructing patients, and recording notes and observations.

  • Prepares appropriate activities for patients staying in the hospital inpatient rehab units.
  • Facilitates the Stroke Support Group one time per month and other recreational groups on a regular cadence.
  • Provides thorough documentation on each patient interaction, which must be timely and include all pertinent information required by state law and accrediting agencies.
  • Completes daily charges for each patient while adhering to ethical practices per insurance guidelines for each payer.
  • Works with Manager and scheduling staff to ensure schedules are managed well to achieve targeted productivity and clinic budget.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
