About The Position

The Woman’s Hospital Perinatal Mental Health Unit is the state’s first inpatient pregnancy and postpartum psychiatric unit. The unit will have a dedicated focus on adult perinatal women with acute mental health conditions providing a safe space for healing, support and empowerment. As a key member of the healthcare team, the Recreational Therapist will play a vital role in enhancing the emotional well-being and overall mental health of perinatal patients by incorporating recreational activities and therapies into their treatment plans. This position involves fostering a therapeutic and supportive environment to aid in the recovery and well-being of mothers during the perinatal period.

Requirements

  • Degree in therapeutic recreation from an accredited post-secondary institution OR a minimum of 10 years of experience providing therapeutic recreational services
  • Degree in another field of study can be substituted if candidate has also attained National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
  • At least 2 years of experience providing therapeutic recreational services

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is strongly preferred
  • Prior experience in recreational therapy, particularly in a mental health setting is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and lead therapeutic recreational activities and programs tailored to the unique needs of perinatal patients, promoting mental wellness and stress reduction.
  • Conduct individual assessments to evaluate patients' recreational and leisure interests, abilities and needs- utilizing this information to develop personalized treatment plans.
  • Teach the importance of time management, boundary setting and self-expression through art and music.
  • Facilitate group therapy sessions and recreational activities that encourage socialization, peer support and skill-building.
  • Utilize adaptive recreational techniques to accommodate patients' physical and emotional abilities, ensuring meaningful participation and progress.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to integrate recreational therapy into the overall treatment plan and coordinate with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, documenting assessments, progress and participation in therapy sessions, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Educate patients and their families about the benefits of recreational therapy, providing guidance on incorporating recreational activities into their daily lives.
  • Perform other duties assigned by department management according to policies and procedures and the mission of Woman's Hospital.
