About The Position

Performs a variety of para-professional duties related to developing, coordinating, and overseeing city sponsored sports programs and leagues. Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager and provides supervision to sports program aides, officials, referees, scorekeepers, leaders, and other part-time and seasonal workers. The role involves designing, developing, implementing, and scheduling youth and adult sports programs, supervising athletic leagues, tournaments, and camps, and preparing and maintaining program facilities. It also includes recruiting, training, and supervising staff and volunteers, marketing and advertising programs, managing inventory, developing emergency protocols and handbooks, and attending conferences to stay updated on recreation trends.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school
  • Four (4) years of experience performing above and related duties
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of community recreation development
  • Working knowledge of teaching and instructing principles
  • Some knowledge of program evaluation methods and techniques
  • Some knowledge of principles of supervision
  • Some knowledge of interpersonal communication skills and public relations
  • Some knowledge of budget development fiscal management
  • Some knowledge of technical writing
  • Some skill in the art of diplomacy and creative problem-solving
  • Ability to carry on multi-recreation programs
  • Ability to evaluate program and personnel effectiveness and efficiency without partiality
  • Ability to generate genuine rapport with all age groups
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with supervisors, state and local agency personnel, co-workers, community interest groups and the public
  • Must possess a valid Utah driver's license

Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, implements, and schedules a variety of youth and adult sports programs and leagues such as baseball, basketball, softball, football, golf, and soccer, etc.
  • Evaluates program delivery and identifies areas for improvement and the benefits to the community and recreation department.
  • Schedules and calendars according to seasonal priorities.
  • Supervises a variety of athletic leagues, tournaments and camps for youth and adult groups.
  • Coordinates, oversees and participates in field preparations and maintenance.
  • Serves as Site supervisor for public and rented facilities.
  • Sets up and maintains program facilities and teaches sport-specific skills and fundamentals to youth and adult participants.
  • Develops a good working relationship with participants and others and resolves any issues or concerns as needed.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers and seasonal staff through the scheduling of program work assignments, educating them on job related tasks and responsibilities.
  • Evaluates employee performance and makes recommendations for rehire for next season.
  • Coordinates volunteer committees and facilitates input from parents and committee members for improvements and changes.
  • Develops, markets, and advertises youth and adult sport programs by providing public announcements to inform the community of recreational opportunities.
  • Delivers publicity and information to local media, advertises by direct marketing and word of mouth.
  • Promotes recreational events and programs for public involvement and enjoyment.
  • Promotes public relations.
  • Works closely with local businesses to promote programs and receive funding to help maintain on going sports events and activities.
  • Conducts and maintains inventory of programs supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Recommends purchase of uniforms, supplies and equipment specific to program areas.
  • Designs, develops, and implements emergency protocols, participant handbooks, and other reports and materials to maintain current information and program procedures.
  • Attends various conference and workshops to keep abreast of current trends in community recreation.
  • Recommends changes in department policies, programs, and organization to better achieve department goals.
  • Performs related duties as required.
