About The Position

The City of Coronado is accepting applications for Recreation Specialist. This posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies across divisions. The working hours are varied and flexible, not to exceed 29 hours per week or 1,000 hours per fiscal year. The Recreation Assistant title is the entry level classification for the part-time position series. Assistants support customer facing activities such as front desk, programs and event staff. Assistants are supervised by Recreation Leaders, Recreation Specialists, Recreation Coordinators, and Recreation Supervisors. The position offers opportunities in various areas including Front Desk & Daily Operations, Youth Programs and Camps, Adult Programs/Senior Programs, Inclusion, Rental Event Staff, Day Trips, Boathouse/Aquatics, Parks & Beaches, Media and Marketing, and Youth and Adult Sports.

Requirements

At least three years of increasingly responsible experience in a specialized recreation program area.
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in area of specialization, recreation, leisure studies or a related field.
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid first aid certificate.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid CPR certificate.
Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a specialized recreation program, activity or class such as dance, gymnastics, painting, cooking, crafts, photography or other recreational activities.
Knowledge of principles and practices of recreation and leisure services program development and implementation.
Knowledge of methods and techniques of planning, organizing, implementing, and directing assigned recreation programs or class.
Knowledge of rules and equipment used in assigned specialized recreational activities.
Knowledge of methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
Knowledge of principles and practices of record keeping.
Knowledge of marketing theories, principles, and practices and their application to the assigned recreation program.
Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Ability to develop and promote specialized programs or classes in assigned recreation area.
Ability to coordinate and direct specialized recreation programs or classes.
Ability to elicit community and organizational support for assigned recreation programs or classes.
Ability to effectively handle and diffuse disruptive behavior among program participants.
Ability to respond to emergency situations and administer first aid and CPR as necessary.
Ability to respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
Ability to interpret and explain City policies and procedures.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ability to supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of lower-level staff.
Incumbents must perform work in an efficient, effective, and timely manner with minimal direction.

Nice To Haves

Possession of a California Driver's License with passenger endorsement is desirable.
Designated positions require the possession, or ability to obtain, a valid California Commercial Driver's license with Passenger Endorsement.

Responsibilities

Organize, lead or teach a specialized recreation program, activity or class such as dance, gymnastics, sports, teens, special events, inclusion, preschool or day camp or other recreational activities.
Promote and coordinate a specific program, service, activity or class; prepare program event and facility marketing materials including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets, and brochures.
Observe necessary precautions to ensure the safety of program or class participants; monitor and inspect assigned facilities for needed maintenance; clean facilities as needed.
Develop program or class curriculum and maintain a calendar of activities; prepare program or class activity brochures for public distribution; modify program or class activities and schedules as required.
Supervise and monitor the behavior of program or class participants; enforce applicable rules and regulations; provide appropriate disciplinary measures as needed.
Evaluate assigned programs or classes for needed supplies and equipment; order or obtain supplies as needed; issue supplies and equipment to participants.
Monitor program or class performance; recommend and implement modifications to systems and procedures.
Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs or classes and program and class effectiveness.
Supervise, direct and coordinate the work of subordinate personnel.
Develop survey instruments; conduct surveys of program or class participants to determine participant needs; interpret and record survey results; implement or adjust programs or classes based on survey findings.
Prepare event spaces for usage and maintenance of the center.
Assist, develop and lead recreation activities for youth including, after school, preschool, teen activities and camps.
Work with adults and seniors, providing customer service to patrons utilizing the center and may assist, develop, and lead recreation programs.
Assist patrons with disabilities with activities.
Set up, take down, supervise and be a staff liaison during rental events.
Drive trips for participants of all ages to local sites and amusements.
Conduct specialized recreation and/or aquatics activities that pertain to these facilities such as padding instructor or water aerobics instructor.
Capture events and activities for all divisions.
Boost social media outreach, marketing programs, write press releases, and provide support for department special projects.
Provide support and lead youth and adult sport leagues and activities.
Teaching, coaching, and instructing fitness programs.
