About The Position

This is a part-time position with a 32-Hour cap per week in accordance with City of Fort Lauderdale Policy and Standards Manual. This position is At-Will and is not covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement or the Personnel Rules. An employee in this class is responsible for the organization and personal leadership of a variety of recreation activities in an indoor and/or outdoor recreation setting or facility. Assist in overseeing staff who handles organizing and conduction games, sports, social and other recreational activities. Work is normally performed under the general supervision of a higher classified employee who issues written and oral instructions. Work is reviewed by the immediate supervisor; constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive tasks.

Requirements

  • High school or G.E.D.
  • Must be 18 years old or older
  • If working as an adult sports official or coach, must possess one (1) year experience in sports instruction or officiating.
  • If working as a lead event worker, must possess two (2) years experience working with a special events team.
  • If working as a tennis instructor, must possess one (1) year experience in tennis instruction.
  • Ability to instruct while adhering to professional standards set for by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association.
  • Ability to demonstrate 4.0 level of ability in accordance with National Tennis Rating Program.
  • Candidates must pass a fingerprinting/background screening process prior to employment

Nice To Haves

  • If working as a water aerobics instructor, must possess two (2) years experience in water aerobics instruction, valid American Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuer certification and First Aid Certificate.
  • Preferred United States Water Fitness Association certification or equivalent
  • If working at the Aquatic Center, must possess American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification, OR certification as a USA Swimming Certified Coach and US Masters Swimming Coach.
  • Preferred U.S Professional Tennis Association or Professional Tennis Registry membership.
  • If working as a face painter, must possess six (6) months experience in an artistic field
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in horticulture and/or education
  • Experience with the cultivation and maintenance of butterfly gardens and food forests
  • Willing and able to work outside in hot and humid conditions year round
  • As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency.
  • All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for general upkeep, maintenance, and cultivation of food forest, butterfly garden, and children’s garden venues
  • Monitor and maintain plant health and appearance
  • Manage and mentor small and large groups of volunteers
  • Keep accurate record of volunteer hours
  • Plan and lead field trips for small and large groups students
  • Maintain organized and accurate record of landscape maintenance
  • Promote community partnerships
  • Control invasive plants within the cultivated venues
  • Make decisions regarding cultivation such as plant placement, plant nutrition, seasonal irrigation schedules, pest management, and plant selection
  • Use environmentally conscious cultivation and maintenance practices
  • Maintain and update digital and/or online records of cultivated flora
  • Performs related work as required
