About The Position

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union. The department is Parks & Recreation. Schedules vary, Monday through Sunday, 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. The location is 315 N. Price Street, Anchorage, AK 99508. Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps. Remote work schedule opportunities (telecommuting) may be considered after successful completion of probation, at the discretion of management and with the approval of the department head. Not all positions are eligible for remote work (telecommuting) per P&P 40-40. To be considered for employment, applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States. The Municipality of Anchorage is not able to provide any type of sponsorship, including Student Visas and Employment Visas, under any circumstances.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Three (3) months experience leading, directing, supervising, coaching, or teaching children and/or adults at a recreation facility, a childcare facility, a childcare program, camps, educational institutions, therapeutic recreational programs, team, organized youth programs, or other similar programs.
  • American Red Cross First Aid and American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification or equivalent within 30 days of hire.
  • Satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160 and AS 12.62.400).

  • AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, the Recreation Specialist I provides leadership and functional supervision to recreation and volunteer participants.
  • Works primarily at the Recreation Center, leading and organizing daily program and facility activities and performs related work as required.
  • Provides excellent customer service in-person, via telephone and e-mail.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
